  • Poet to give reading

Poet Sherry Robbins will give a reading from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 19 in the UB Anderson Gallery to celebrate the recent publication of her book of poetry, “The Whale,” by BlazeVOX [books].

She also will give a talk about her involvement with the vibrant poetry and art scene at Artpark during the 1970s and 1980s in anticipation of the Sept. 25 opening of the exhibition “Artpark: 1974-1984” in the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin with a reading by poet and BlazeVOX [books] publisher Geoffrey Gatza from his new book, “Secrets of My Prison House.”

A frequent workshop presenter for the UB Anderson Gallery’s education program, Robbins has taught creative writing workshops throughout New York State and abroad since 1977, and was named New York State Teaching Artist of the Year for 2005 by the Association of Teaching Artists.

She is an arts-in-education consultant for the University of Coimbra in Portugal and for Portugal’s Belgais Center for  the Study of Arts. She soon will assume the role of resident poet for the Lorca Foundation in Granada, Spain.

In addition to “The Whale,” she is the author of “Snapshots of Paradise” and has published dozens of poems in literary journals and anthologies both here and in Spain and Portugal.

The UB Anderson Gallery is located at One Martha Jackson Place, off Englewood Avenue between Main Street and Kenmore Avenue, near the UB South Campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. For information, call 829-3754.

  • Officers participating in Tour de Force

University Police officers Amy Pedlow and Christopher Bartolomei will carry on what is becoming a UB tradition when they ride the four-day, 250-mile Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride to raise money for the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

This year marks the third consecutive year UB officers have represented University Police in the event. Pedlow, a lieutenant, and Bartolomei, assistant chief, will ride from the Pentagon to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan from Sept. 11-14, the latest route in the annual ride, which is always approximately 250 miles.

UB Police Officer Dale Hohl joined Pedlow as a cyclist the first two years the university took part in the fund-raising effort. Hohl said university police have raised nearly $12,000 over the past two years, putting UB among the most successful organizations taking part in the charity event.

“The funds go to families of police officers killed in the line of duty in the past year,” says Hohl. “The number of police officers killed increased 43 percent this year. And if that trend continues, we could see the highest total in two decades.”

To raise money for the event, Hohl, Pedlow and Bartolomei will sell $5 raffle tickets for a 42-inch TV, a 23-inch TV and an iPod Nano. They will sell tickets Aug. 16 and Aug. 23 outside the Tim Horton’s shop at Sweet Home Road and Sheridan Drive in Amherst. Tickets also can be obtained by e-mailing Hohl at dalehohl@buffalo.edu.

Those interested in supporting the fund-raising effort also can make a donation online at the a href="http://www.tourdeforceny.com">Tour de Force website. Hohl will enter the names of online donors in the university’s drawing.

The drawing for the local prizes will be held Aug. 27 at the annual picnic for new UB students and their families.

The three UB officers involved in this year’s bike ride also can be reached through the UB Police Department at 645-2227.
