Ebert to open lecture series for teachers
Charles H.V. Ebert, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography, will talk about "Hurricanes and Tornadoes" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 in the opening program of the 2010-11 Western New York Science and Technology Forum “Horizons of the Sciences” lecture series for area teachers.
The lecture, and all others in the series with the exception of field trips to Old Fort Niagara State Park and H2Gro Greenhouses in Youngstown, Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Depew and the Erie Canal locks in Lockport, will take place from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, through Dec. 15, in 201 Natural Sciences Complex, North Campus. Locations will be announced for lectures on Jan. 5 and Jan. 12.
Speakers from area institutions and industries, as well as UB, will provide information on new exciting scientific developments that can be incorporated into the classroom.
Among the topics to be covered in this year’s series are “The Smart Pill: A Western New York Technology Success Story,” “Emerging Science Issues in the Great Lakes,” “Faults and their Implications in New York State” and “Peregrine Falcons of Western New York.”
In addition to Ebert, UB speakers will be Gerald Rising, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Graduate School of Education; Charles Patrick Ewing, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the UB Law School; Joyce Sirianni, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Anthropology; Mary Alice Coffroth, professor in the Department of Geological Sciences; and Lisa Butler, associate professor in the School of Social Work.
The series was begun in 1969 by its director, George H. Nancollas, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Larkin Chair in the Department of Chemistry. Co-directors are Stephen Free, professor of biological sciences, and Marcus Bursik, professor of geology.
The fee for the lecture series is $30.

CFA to hold annual piano sale
UB faculty, staff and alumni will have first crack at merchandise and best pricing on a variety of pre-owned pianos during the annual Center for the Arts Piano Sale, being held Sept. 10-12 in the CFA, North Campus.
Buyers may preview and purchase pianos used at UB and at other institutions by appointment only from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The sale will open to the general public from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Merchandise for sale includes Kawai grand, console and digital pianos, as well as pre-owned instruments from Steinway and Yamaha, among others.
Appointments can be made by calling 1-800-675-9932 after Aug. 31.
Delivery and on-premise financing is available. The sale is coordinated by Sheeser Piano Company, Western New York’s authorized Kawai dealer since 1984.
The sale makes it possible for UB to have the use of new instruments each year through the Kawai College Loan Program.
