  • International Night at UB Stadium

The festivities surrounding Saturday’s home football game against Central Florida will have a global theme as UB celebrates its international community at International Night.

Activities will get under way at 4:30 p.m. with a parade to UB Stadium through the tailgating lots. Beginning at 5 p.m., foods from around the world will be available at a buffet in the east side suite area of the stadium. Entertainment will be provided before and during the game by members of UB’s international student association clubs.

    Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The cost is $40, which includes a game ticket and the pregame party. The cost for the party only is $18.

  • Alumni dance concert to benefit residency

Back to Buffalo 2: UB Dance Alumni All-Star Concert, a fundraiser for the Center for the Arts’ Dance Residency Outreach Program, will take place at 8 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Drama Theatre in the CFA, North Campus.

The performance is sponsored by the UB Alumni Association.

The Dance Residency Outreach Program brings professional dance companies to UB and to area schools for workshops, demonstrations and performances. More than a dozen professional visiting artists have provided more than 20,000 students with free dance performances and workshops since the program began in 1997.

Back to Buffalo 2 follows on the heels of last year’s sold-out dance alumni concert event and features another eclectic group of accomplished alumni.

All proceeds from the performance will benefit the spring 2011 Taylor 2 residency.

In addition, UB’s Zodiaque Dance Company will perform a piece choreographed by Jon Lehrer, whose company, LehrerDance—including recent UB graduate Colleen Walsh—also will perform.

The alumni dancers also will conduct master classes for both junior students (ages 11-14) and advanced students (15 and older) on Sept. 26. Visit the CFA website for registration details.

Tickets for Back to Buffalo 2: UB Dance Alumni All-Star Concert are $26.50 for general admission and $13 for students, and are available at the CFA box office and at all Ticketmaster locations including Ticketmaster.com. For more information, call 645-2787.

  • UB Art Galleries collaborate on exhibition

The UB Art Galleries are among the regional museums and galleries collaborating on “Beyond/In Western New York 2010: Alternating Currents,” this year’s version of the biennial, multi-venue exhibition presenting the work of outstanding artists from Western New York and Southern Ontario.

As part of “Beyond/In Western New York 2010,” the UB Anderson Gallery will exhibit the work of artists Kurt Von Voetsch, Rodney Taylor, Barbara Lattanzi and Elinor Whidden. An opening reception will be held from 6-10 p.m. Sept. 25 in the gallery at One Martha Jackson Place, off Englewood Avenue near Kenmore Avenue and the UB South Campus.

The UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts is exhibiting “Artpark: 1974-1984. An opening reception will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sept. 25 in the gallery.

Organizers say the work of the artists in “Beyond/In Western New York 2010” “responds to the regionally relevant theme ‘alternating currents’ and its undercurrent of utopian power, both literal and metaphorical; reclamation or use of natural assets; visions of the future and the past; technological progress or intrusion; and the diverse demographic and social constructs of this region.”

The exhibition for the first time features the work of artists from outside the region, “blurring the local with the global and challenging the assumptions of what these distinctions mean today, when all artists are both.”

“Beyond/In Western New York 2010” will be on view through Dec. 19 in the UB Art Galleries and in numerous other local venues, among them the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Big Orbit Gallery, Buffalo Arts Studio and the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College. Visit the Beyond/In WNY 2010 website for a full list of venues and artists.

  • UB sponsors basketball clinic

The Division of Athletics, in conjunction with the Office of Community Relations, is sponsoring a free basketball clinic on Saturday on the South Campus for children living in the University Heights neighborhood.

Open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, the Higher Heights Basketball Clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Goodyear basketball courts, next to Allen Hall. In case of rain, the clinic will move to Clark Hall, also on the South Campus.

Directing the clinic will be head men’s basketball coach Reggie Witherspoon; Linda Hill-MadDonald, head women’s coach; and assistant men’s coach Jim Kwitchoff.

Participants will receive instruction in six basketball skills—shooting, ball handling, passing, defense, footwork and rebounding—and will have the opportunity to talk with UB coaches and student-athletes, as well as tour Alumni Arena on the North Campus.

For more information, contact the Office of Community Relations at 645-3099.

The event is limited to the first 120 registrants.

  • Neuroscience Research Day set

The Buffalo chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is seeking abstracts for its fourth annual Neuroscience Research Day, to be held on Oct. 2 in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

The event will feature short research talks, vendor booths and a poster session.

“Distinguished Scientist Lectures” will be given by Anthony Auerbach, UB professor of physiology and biophysics, on “Neurotransmitter, Receptor, Synapse,” and by Todd C. Sacktor, professor of physiology and pharmacology and neurology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center on “Mechanisms of Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity.”

The cost is $30 for faculty, postdocs and technicians; $25 for students.

Those interested in attending or submitting abstracts must register by Sept. 26.
