Obituaries
Maureen R.L. Mussenden, associate counsel in UB’s SUNY Office of University Counsel, died Oct. 28 in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care in Cheektowaga after a battle with cancer. She was 54.
Mussenden was a member of the recently appointed search committee charged with identifying a successor to UB President John B. Simpson.
An expert in the areas of health law and corporate law with specialized expertise in hospital/university affiliation agreements, Mussenden served as associate counsel in UB’s Academic Health Center and its component schools, including the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
She negotiated the landmark agreement between UB, Kaleida Health and Erie County Medical Center Corp. that is shaping the delivery of health care in Western New York under the umbrella of the Great Lakes Health System.
Her practice also included work in corporate restructuring and reorganization of not-for-profit and for-profit faculty physician practice corporations, and corporate restructuring and reorganization of hospitals.
Prior to joining UB, Mussenden was a member of the law firm of Harris Beach & Wilcox LLP from 1992-99, where she was a partner from 1995-99. She also served as associate in the law firm of Saperston & Day P.C. from 1983-91.
A native of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Mussenden earned a BA from Keuka College and a JD from Cornell Law School. She completed the coursework for an LLM in health law at Loyola University in Chicago.
She was a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Bar Association of Erie County and Minority Bar Association of Western New York. She served as chair of several committees on behalf of these organizations.
She also was actively involved with numerous community organizations, among them Attorney Access Inc., Aid to Indigent Prisoners Society and Calvary Episcopal Church. She served on the board of trustees for Catholic Health East, Hilbert College and the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 6 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 20 Milton St., Williamsville. Burial will be private.
