Several UB graduate and professional schools—including the UB engineering, medicine, law, business and nursing schools—were recognized as among the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report in its annual ranking of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” released on March 15.

“We’re proud that UB’s graduate schools and programs continue to rise in the ranks of nationally lauded programs,” says Provost Satish K. Tripathi. “The university’s faculty, students, staff and alumni share credit for the successes of these programs and for the university’s considerable international prominence.”

The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences again is ranked as one of the best medical schools in America—moving up four spots from last year to No. 55 among the nation’s best medical schools in production of medical research. Nearly 150 medical schools were considered for the ranking.

“Our students and faculty are beginning to benefit from the implementation of the UB medical school’s transforming strategic plan to enrich our educational, research and clinical programs,” says Michael Cain, dean of the medical school.

Other UB health science schools and programs to earn top rankings include the School of Nursing (No. 79), audiology program (No. 16), speech-language pathology program (No. 25) and the clinical psychology program (No. 43) in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences continues to be ranked in the U.S. News top tier, earning a No. 52 ranking among 200 schools of engineering considered by the magazine. The engineering school also distinguished itself in the U.S. News ranking of engineering disciplines: No. 26 in industrial engineering, No. 27 in civil engineering, No. 41 in chemical engineering, No. 67 in mechanical engineering and No. 75 in electrical engineering.

The UB Law School moved up 19 spots to No. 84 to rank among the magazine’s “top 100” law schools in the United States. Nearly 200 accredited U.S. law schools were considered for the ranking. The U.S. News ranking is the UB Law School’s third such national ranking in the past six months. The quality of a UB Law education and the outstanding skill of the school’s graduates also were highlighted by Thomson Reuters, the largest legal publisher in the U.S. Thomson Reuters ranked UB Law School 48th nationwide. And a ranking developed in New Yorker magazine by journalist Malcolm Gladwell places the UB Law School 40th in the nation based on value for the dollar, LSAT scores and faculty publishing.

The School of Management’s full-time MBA program is ranked No. 75 among 437 accredited business schools considered by U.S. News; the school’s part-time MBA program is ranked No. 73 by the magazine. The U.S. News ranking is the School of Management’s fourth national ranking since September—the school has been ranked as one of the nation’s best business schools by Bloomberg BusinessWeek, the Financial Times, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal.

S Anirudh says:

While UB's focus is on research, it doesn't make much effort into improving career services for engineering graduate students, who are a very important chunk of the international student population in UB. UB's courses are more research-oriented than job oriented. UB can do more to give access to the hardware and software which can help one get a job quickly, especially when these students put up with arbitrary and unannounced tuition hikes. Also UB should try harder to hold a good career fair. I applied for 100+ jobs since graduation in Feb 2011 and got 4 interviews all on my own. Why can't UB pursue companies aggressively the way international job seekers hunt for jobs? I have gone to career fairs as far away as Raleigh, NC.

The UB School of Social Work is ranked 36th by U.S. News and Worls Report, but was left out of this article. Congratulations to the School of Social Work, too!

Alan Hutson says:

The Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health and Health Professions ranked #64 in the nation among Statistics and Biostatistics programs after being in existence for only 9 years. There are a few hundred graduate programs in statistics and biostatistic in the nation. Many weren't even ranked due to not meeting the minimal standard for a rank.
