Obituaries

A memorial service will be at 11 a. m. May 14 in Fellowship Wesleyan Church, 1645 Southwestern Blvd., West Seneca, for Charles James Smith, longtime UB associate professor of psychology who died April 23 in his Clarence home. He was 85.

Born in East Aurora, Smith graduated from East Aurora High School and served with the Navy during World War II, including service in post-war Japan.
He received his bachelor’s degree from UB and earned master’s and doctoral degrees from McGill University in Montreal.

Smith taught at the University of Michigan from 1953-61, then joined the UB psychology faculty, teaching and conducting research until his retirement in 1999. He maintained an office in the Department of Psychology until his death.

He was a member of numerous national and international academic organizations, taught in Italy and Australia during his career, and spoke three languages fluently.

He also was an avid outdoorsman, traveler, wine and classical music connoisseur, and railroad buff.
