June in Buffalo set for June 6-11
June in Buffalo is back with an exceptional lineup of emerging and faculty composers.
June in Buffalo, the internationally renowned festival and conference for emerging composers of new music, will take place June 6-11 on the UB North Campus.
Presented by the Department of Music and the Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music, June in Buffalo brings together young composers from all over the world for an intensive week of study alongside a faculty of distinguished senior composers. The program features afternoon and evening concerts, master classes, workshops, open rehearsals, lectures and seminars. Afternoon workshop concerts primarily feature the work of the student composers and generally are free of charge; evening performances highlight the work of the faculty composers. Admission for the evening concerts typically is $12 for the general public, $9 for UB faculty/staff/alumni and senior citizens, and $5 for students.
June in Buffalo was founded at UB in 1975 by Morton Feldman, a pioneer of “indeterminate music,” a development associated with the experimental New York School of composers, among them John Cage, Christian Wolff and Earle Brown—all of whom were involved with June in Buffalo from its inception.
The festival soon evolved into one of the most influential educational and performance conferences of its kind in the world. It has been directed since its founding by David Felder, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Birge-Cary Chair in Composition in the UB Department of Music who has long been recognized as a leader among his generation of American composers.
In addition to Felder, faculty composers participating in the festival this year include Edmund Campion, Eric Chasalow, Hilda Paredes, Brice Pauset and Jeffrey Stadelman, UB associate professor of composition.
Among the resident ensembles and special guest who will perform the work of both the emerging and faculty composers are Swedish classical guitarist Magnus Andersson, violinist Irvine Arditti of the esteemed Arditti Quartet, Ensemble Linea, conductor Brad Lubman, the New York-based Signal ensemble and the Slee Sinfonietta, UB’s professional chamber orchestra.
