Sexual-assault response training to be held

At least one in four female college students will be the victim of sexual assault during their academic careers, according to the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault. And less than 5 percent of students will report their assault to police, decreasing the likelihood they will be linked to the vital services they need to heal.

But many will talk to a trusted faculty or staff member.

The UB Violence Prevention Committee is sponsoring an in-service training session to increase faculty and staff awareness of the sexual-assault response UB provides for its students in the community, at the hospital and afterward.

The session will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. July 15 in Goodyear X on the South Campus.

The goals of the training are to provide a basic understanding of sexual assault, an overview of the sexual-assault response system, an understanding of hospital response and rape exam, and an understanding of advocacy available for victims.

The session is free and open to all UB faculty and staff. Seating is limited, however; those wishing to attend should email Anna Sotelo-Peryea at acperyea@buffalo.edu to register.
