Jordana Maisel, adjunct assistant professor in the School of Architecture and Planning and director of outreach and policy studies for UB’s Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDeA Center), has been named interim deputy director of the Global Universal Design Commission (GUDC).

Universal design refers to the creation of buildings, products and services accessible for people of diverse abilities. The nonprofit GUDC develops universal design standards, and Maisel has been instrumental in working with the commission to develop new standards and a proposed ratings system.

Maisel will continue in her position at the IDeA Center. She also serves as co-director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Universal Design in the Built Environment and as project director for the RERC on Accessible Public Transportation.

George Nancollas, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Larkin Chair in Chemistry, and Michael Sheridan, UB Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geology, have been named 2011 Pioneers of Science by the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute.

Pioneers of Science are selected biennially based on the significance of their contributions in their respective fields.

The award winners will be honored at a two-part program on Oct. 27 consisting of a morning of scientific lectures and interactive sessions led by the award winners, and an evening awards banquet.
