Expo encourages green lifestyle
Members of the UB community can learn about green ideas and practices—from composting to using solar power to recycling—from local and national leaders in the sustainability movement at the third annual Greener Shade of Blue & You Day on Sept. 21.
The free event, sponsored by UB Green, the Professional Staff Senate, Campus Dining and Shops, and the undergraduate Student Association, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, North Campus.
It will feature lectures, door prizes, demonstrations and nearly 30 local and national business and nonprofit organizations offering ways to increase sustainability at home, while also learning about community efforts to make Western New York a greener place.
“UB’s Greener Shade of Blue & You Day continues to offer UB students, faculty and staff environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions for home and at school,” says Jim Simon, an environmental educator with UB Green and event co-chair. “From rain barrels to green power, the saying that ‘every day is Earth Day’ has never been more true.”
Attendees will have the opportunity to see exotic wildlife from the Buffalo Zoo; recycle old cell phones to benefit the zoo through Mariah Saves Gorillas, a project created by a Williamsville middle school student; bring old prescription and over-the-counter drugs for safe disposal; recycle toner cartridges; and learn about great gardening and composting, as well as how to place an order for a discount composter.
In conjunction with the environmental fair, Campus Dining and Shops will host the Pride of New York Showcase featuring organic and local produce, dairy products and fresh baked goods from Western New York farms, fields and kitchens. The showcase, on the special events field across Putnam Way from the Student Union, will spotlight many vendors that partner with UB.
“We’re looking forward to this year’s event,” adds event co-chair Janiece Jankowski, circulation manager for the Arts & Sciences Libraries. “Stop by and see our ‘green’ vendors, collect valuable information, be eligible for giveaways and door prizes, meet some exotic wildlife and have a bite to eat at the Pride of New York.
“We hope to see you there.”
