UB rises in U.S. News rankings
UB is one of the best universities in the country, according to the annual “Best Colleges” rankings released on Monday by U.S. News and World Report.
UB is ranked No. 54 among all public universities in the U.S. and is No. 111 among both public and private universities in the country. With the ranking, UB again earns the distinction as one of the nation’s “Best National Universities,” according to U.S. News and World Report.
UB moved up nine spots among all universities and four spots among public universities, compared to last’s year report. More than 1,500 of the country's four-year colleges and universities were considered by U.S. News for the rankings in a handful of categories.
Also earning a top ranking was UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which rose eight spots to No. 57 among the nation’s best undergraduate engineering programs at schools whose highest degree is a doctorate. UB’s School of Management earned a best business school ranking: No. 81 among all undergraduate business programs nationwide and higher than any other SUNY business school.
“We’re always pleased when the educational opportunities and experiences we provide our students are recognized as among the best nationwide,” said Harvey G. Stenger Jr., interim provost. “We strive to provide our students with great teaching, access to world-class educational resources and opportunities to perform research alongside renowned scholars.”
UB’s national ranking was boosted by its academic reputation score, according to U.S. News. Academic reputation is heavily weighted in the rankings, and is based on national surveys of presidents, provosts and admissions directors, as well as high school counselors. The university also scored well in student selectivity, and student retention and graduation rates.
The rankings are available on the U.S. News website.

David Harary says:
I don't quite get how all of UB's graduate programs are ranked within the top 100, yet our undergraduate college is ranked outside of the top 100. UB deserves much better than 111. Especially when I see Binghamton being #90...

Although I am always proud of UB's academic achievements, it upsets me as a law school student and a proponent of the SUNY system to see the administration boast their US News Rankings when UB does well, and cry at the problems in the ranking system when UB does poorly. The University at Buffalo Law School has for several years felt so much whiplash from US News that its system of ranking any institution--whether an undergraduate college or professional degree program--seems wholly inadequate. Moreover, I am extremely disappointed at the University for playing the games that US News demands from institutions, and subsequently lying and changing programs at the expense of students' education and tuition.

I always thought UB deserved better than the previous rankings. I hope this is just the beginning of a steady climb to UB's true colors.
