  • Hip hop film fest to be held

Rapper MC Lupe Fiasco’s song “Double Burger with Cheese” serves as the inspiration for the 2012 Hip Hop Film Series, presented by the departments of Visual Studies and Media Study.

The films will be screened on select Mondays at 6 p.m., beginning Feb. 13, in the Screening Room in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. The series is free and open to the public.

In “Double Burger with Cheese,” Fiasco “eloquently ties together the narratives of a number of seminal films from the hip hop-inspired ‘hood’ genre,” notes John Jennings, associate professor of visual studies and organizer of the series.

“These films helped, to some degree, polarize how depictions of black masculinity, race, urban space, class, sexuality and other socialized aspects of identity were portrayed in popular media. These six films are a selection from Fiasco’s ingenious lyrics which, in his words, helped ‘raise a generation.’” notes Jennings.

    The festival schedule:

    • Feb. 13: “Dead Presidents,” directed by the Hughes Brothers
    • Feb. 27: “South Central,” directed by Steve Anderson
    • March 5: “Boyz ‘n the Hood,” directed by Jon Singleton
    • April 9: “Juice,” directed by Ernest J. Dickerson
    • April 23: “New Jack City,” directed by Mario Van Peebles

No session will be held on March 14 due to spring break.
