  • Huber named assistant vice provost

    Mara B. Huber has been appointed assistant vice provost for undergraduate education, a new position that has been charged with extending UB’s undergraduate research opportunities to promising high school students.

    Huber, most recently special assistant to the president for educational initiatives and director of UB’s Center for Educational Collaboration, will work with existing offices and programs throughout the university—including the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (CURCA), the University Honors College and the Undergraduate Academies—“to create a seamless pipeline for undergraduate research, while also examining opportunities to extend this pipeline to the high school community,” says A. Scott Weber, vice provost and dean for undergraduate education.

    “As exemplified in the recent Celebration of Student Academic Excellence, extraordinary research programs and collaborative initiatives are evolving daily offering expanding opportunities for students and faculty to work together,” Weber says. “Extending this as well to the larger Buffalo community will reap rich rewards for all.”

    Huber joined the UB staff in 2003 as director of special projects in the Graduate School of Education. She was named special assistant to the president for educational initiatives and director of the UB-Buffalo Public Schools Partnership in 2007. She was founding director of the Center for Educational Collaboration, which serves as the hub for UB’s pre-K-16 initiatives.

    Huber holds a PhD in cognitive psychology from Fredonia State College and served as an assistant professor at Fredonia State before joining UB.

  • Falcon chicks named

    UB’s falcon fans have selected names for the four peregrine chicks residing in the nesting box atop the tower of Mackay Heating Plant on the South Campus.

    They are Feather Locklear (female, white band), Talon Alda (male, yellow band), Lancelot (male, green band) and Dr. Eubie Claw (female, blue band).

    The chicks were banded by state Department of Environmental Conservation biologists earlier this week. Banding the chicks allows wildlife biologists to track the movements and lifespans of the endangered birds.

  • Body donors to be remembered

    Individuals who have donated their bodies to UB for teaching and research through the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences’ Anatomical Gift Program and have chosen to have their cremains buried in a common gravesite will be remembered during a ceremony to be held at 1:30 p.m. June 14 in Skinnersville Cemetery on Frontier Road near the Audubon Parkway.

    A non-denominational service will take place in the Little White Chapel on the grounds of the cemetery, with a reception to follow.
