  • Lightweight four wins bronze at IRAs

UB’s lightweight four boat won the bronze medal at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships in Camden, N.J., on Saturday. It was UB’s first-ever appearance at the IRAs.

Comprised of Katherine Evely (coxswain), Cornelia Willis, Julia Hahn, Katie Coffin and Margaret Lawn, the Bulls finished with a time of 7:25.44. Wisconsin won the race with a time of 7:14.63 and Stanford took the silver with a time of 7:19.46.

“We had a good start and stayed in it with Stanford for a while, but as Wisconsin and Stanford broke away, we were able to maintain and row our race and keep pushing away from Radcliffe,” said lightweight coach Kerri Kanaley.

UB won the bronze by finishing ahead of Radcliffe (7:34.68), Princeton (7:47.02) and Georgetown (8:06.41).

“This is a very special group of student-athletes who have worked very hard for this and to be able to have a showing like this among the best in the nation, I couldn’t be more proud,” Kanaley said.

  • National Grid partners with UB to offer camp

Where can future engineers go to build robots, learn about engineering disasters and test toy buildings on a life-sized earthquake shake table? Beginning this July, they can go to UB, thanks to a generous gift from National Grid.

National Grid has given $200,000 over four years to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to run an annual weeklong residential summer camp for 60 high school students entering their sophomore and junior years.

This year, spots for the camp—to be held July 30-Aug. 2 on the North Campus—are being filled via a nomination process in selected high schools, including Amherst, Buffalo, Clarence, Sweet Home and Williamsville. School administrators nominated students with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher (95 and up) and mathematical ability who are interested in engineering careers. Beginning in 2013, eligible students will be able to apply on their own to participate in the camp.

Camp participants experience UB campus life, interacting with professors and college students while learning engineering concepts. Students live on campus and are supervised by faculty and dorm counselors. The camp will include demonstrations and hands-on activities in engineering disciplines, including design, team building and leadership skills. Students also will participate in lab and computer exercises, field trips and recreational activities.

And building robots? That begins on Day 2 of camp, using Lego Mindstorms Robotics Kits.

  • UB Athletics posts highest GPA in school history

UB student-athletes posted a 3.001 grade-point average during the spring 2012 semester, the highest GPA in school history and the first time the department had a collective 3.0 GPA.

Nine teams had a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, led by the 3.513 GPA of the women’s soccer team. Women’s tennis (3.411), women’s cross country (3.360), women’s swimming and diving (3.283), rowing (3.240), volleyball (3.217), women’s track and field (3.208), men’s swimming and diving (3.169), and men’s cross country (3.107) also finished above the department average.

UB had 277 student-athletes—56 percent—finish with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester, an all-time high. The Bulls also had 21 student-athletes post a perfect 4.0 GPA.

To date, 23 UB student-athletes have been named to their respective Academic All-MAC teams during the 2011-12 school year. They are:
