Gene Morse, professor of pharmacy practice and associate director translation pharmacology core at UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, has received the prestigious Volwiler Research Achievement Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Morse, a pioneer in AIDS clinical pharmacotherapy, was recognized for his outstanding research and contributions to the fields of clinical/translational pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences. This is only the second time the Volwiler award has been given to a clinical scientist.

Morse will receive the award on July 17 during the AACP’s annual meeting.

Two outstanding UB innovators in dental medicine recently were honored by national organizations for their contributions to dental education.

John Eisner, associate professor emeritus, received the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry’s (ACFD) Distinguished Service Award.

Roger Triftshauser, an orthodontist and 1961 UB dental school alumnus, received the American Student Dental Association’s (ASDA) 2012 Paragon Award.

The ACFD Distinguished Service Award is not conferred annually, but only when a member has made a contribution of sweeping significance to the field of dentistry.

Eisner was recognized for developing information management systems that have been used in admissions and course/student evaluations in dental education.

Triftshauser was recognized for involving the American College of Dentists (ACD) in the implementation of a course on ethics that is now part of the UB freshman introductory curriculum. On Ethics Day, as it is now known, he and his colleagues from the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) and the ACD interact with the freshman class and lecture on dentistry’s core ethical values.

Triftshauser and his colleagues also address all dental school classes during an evening lecture and open forum to discuss the tripartite system of organized dentistry and the importance of membership in the American Dental Association (ADA), the American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC) and state PACs.
