  • Black to lead United Way campaign

Dennis Black, vice president for university life and services, has been named chair of the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County’s 2012 campaign.

Black succeeds Dennis Elsenbeck, regional executive for National Grid, who chaired the 2010 and 2011 efforts.

“Dennis has been a longtime supporter of United Way, both personally and at UB,” said Michael Weiner, United Way’s president and CEO. “We are delighted that he has agreed to serve and know that his energy and commitment will enable us to build even further on the successes we have achieved for the community over the past two years.”

Black twice served as chair of UB’s Campaign for the Community—in 1998 and last year—and also has been part of the United Way’s campaign volunteer team. When asked why he agreed to serve as chair of the campaign this year, Black noted the significance of United Way in the community.

“How do you say ‘no’ to an organization that says ‘yes’ to so many in need and that is totally dedicated to improving our community well-being?” he asked. “When asked to do your part for Buffalo and Erie County, and for our United Way, you say ‘yes.’”

The 2012 campaign officially kicks off with the 20th annual Day of Caring on Aug. 15.

  • Donate school supplies for needy kids

Faculty and staff may donate school supplies in a university-wide drive to benefit pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students at several Buffalo schools.

Donated items, including paper, pencils, pens, rulers, planners, markers and folders, will be distributed to the Futures Academy, Aloma D. Johnson Fruit Belt School, Martin Luther King Multicultural Institute, Highgate Heights Elementary and Westminster Community Charter School.

Items may be dropped off at various donation sites on the North, South and Downtown campuses. Visit the Your UB blog for a list of donation sites and suggested donation items.

The deadline for donations is Aug. 31.

“This is another great example of the university giving back to the community. This university-wide drive will hopefully provide the youth at our neighboring elementary schools the tools they need to have a successful school year,” says Michael J. Pietkiewicz, assistant vice president for government and community relations.
