  • Tim Hortons opens in Kapoor Hall

South Campus Tim Hortons’ junkies no longer have to cross Main Street to get a dose of their favorite caffeinated beverage. An outlet of the popular coffee shop is now open in John and Editha Kapoor Hall, the new South Campus home of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The site, operated by local Tim Hortons’ franchisee David Beaton, is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

It is a full-service eatery, featuring a full line of specialty soups and sandwiches, as well as the traditional beverages and baked goods.

Located on the first floor of Kapoor, it accepts cash, Campus Cash, Dining Dollars and meal credits.

Tim Hortons’ outlets also operate in Putnam’s in the Student Union and in the Alfiero Center in Jacobs Management Center, both on the North Campus.

The Tim Hortons’ outlets at UB are a direct result of feedback supplied by customer focus groups in an effort to suit the ever-changing palates of the campus community, according to Jeff Brady, executive director of Campus Dining & Shops.

“Our research showed the importance of branded products to our customers, and we are committed to providing exceptional goods and services to our campus community,” he says.

  • Feminist group sponsors trivia night

If you know when doctors claimed education was dangerous to women’s health or the name of Harriot Blatch’s mom, you’re in luck.

Because most pub trivia questions tend to overlook people of color, women and LGBT folks, UB’s graduate group Society of Feminists (UBSoFem) has partnered with Merge restaurant and bar to present what they call “an affirming night of historical, current and pop-culture trivia that honors on-going struggles for social justice.”

The event will take place at 9 p.m. Aug. 21 in Merge, 439 Delaware Ave., Buffalo. It will be moderated by Britney McClain from PUSH Buffalo.

It will be the first in a series of fall events sponsored by UBSoFem to promote dialogue around gender equality. The cover charge is $5 per person and all proceeds go to UBSoFem for educational programming.

Teams of up to four can compete for several prizes, including a $60 gift certificate to Merge restaurant, merchandise from Queen City Roller Girls, gift cards from Righteous Babe Records and more.

To register your team or to join a team, contact UBSoFem at ubfeminists@gmail.com. You also can join the event on Facebook or follow the group’s Tumblr.

This event also is sponsored in part by the UB School of Social Work Graduate Student Association, Queen City Roller Girls, Burning Books and Righteous Babe Records.

UBSoFem was founded in 2006 by graduate students in the UB School of Social Work to engage the community through a feminist lens by organizing film screenings, panel discussions, speakers, actions and educational programming.

In October, the group will sponsor a screening of “Miss Representation,” Jennifer Newsom Siegel’s 2011 documentary about women’s role in our society that will leave audiences shaken but armed with a startling new perspective.

It also will host an awards ceremony honoring UB faculty members and students whose work reflects a commitment to gender equality and social justice.

  • Flags at half-mast honor fallen soldier

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings—including those at UB—be flown at half-mast on Aug. 16, in honor of a New York Marine who died in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Aug. 10.

Lance Cpl. Gregory T. Buckley of Oceanside died while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, of the 3rd Marine Division, a part of the III Marine Expeditionary Force based in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Cuomo has ordered that flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-mast in honor of and tribute to New York service members who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
