  • UB to host block party, safety fair

UB’s annual Block Party and Safety Fair will take place from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 2 on the Hayes Hall lawn, UB South Campus.

The free event offers UB students and residents of the University Heights neighborhood a chance to get to know one another and find out information about block clubs, community and civic groups, local businesses and university services.

It will feature information tables staffed by local police and governmental agencies, university departments and local businesses.

Free food and live music also will be available.

  • MBA students provide service

Incoming MBA students in UB’s School of Management provided hundreds of hours of community service to local nonprofit organizations earlier this week as part of their entrée into the MBA program.

Nearly a hundred new MBA students were divided into groups and provided hands-on service to four nonprofit organizations: Buffalo Olmstead Parks Conservancy, Lothlorien Therapeutic Riding Center, the International Institute of Buffalo and Buffalo ReUSE. Service included painting fences and barns, setting up refugee homes and organizing donations.

The service project is one component of MBA Advantage, the School of Management’s innovative professional development series. Beginning with orientation and continuing throughout the two-year MBA program, MBA Advantage helps students quickly become involved in the team-based learning environment that is the backbone of the UB MBA curriculum and develop skills that others might obtain only through years of corporate experience.

“We added a community service aspect to MBA Advantage this year to further strengthen our team-building goals, with the added benefit of assisting organizations that provide much-needed services to the people of Western New York,” says David Frasier, assistant dean and director of graduate programs in the School of Management. “In addition, companies today are very civic-minded and this is yet another experience that helps our graduates make an impact on the firms that hire them.”

MBA Advantage continues throughout the students’ MBA experience, with informative and interactive seminars and workshops on such topics as case analysis, team building, globalization, innovation and creativity, sustainability, professional image management and job-search techniques.

  • Cropp named Niagara Executive of the Year

Michael W. Cropp, president and CEO of Independent Health, has been named the 2012 Buffalo Niagara Executive of the Year by the School of Management.

The award will be presented at the 63rd Annual School of Management Alumni Association Awards Banquet on Oct. 11.

Cropp was selected by a vote of past honorees and the board of directors of the alumni association, who cited his collaborative leadership and community-minded approach to improving the health of people in Western New York.

A board-certified family physician, Cropp joined Independent Health in 1996 as executive vice president and chief medical officer and was named to his current position in 2004.

Prior to joining Independent Health, Cropp served as medical director at Millard Fillmore Health System in Buffalo from 1995 to 1996 and at HealthPartners in Minneapolis, Minn., from 1993 to 1995.

Cropp participates on a number of national boards, including Alliance of Community Health Plans, where he serves as vice chair, and America’s Health Insurance Plans. A leader in establishing community initiatives to improve access to quality health care, Cropp is the founding chair and a current board member of the P2 Collaborative of Western New York, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of people in the area, and is the founding chair of Western New York Clinical Information Exchange, which is now called HEALTHeLINK, a consortium of health care providers, hospital networks and insurance companies working to provide electronic exchange of clinical information throughout the region’s health care systems.
