Department of Music to present concerts
Guitarist Jason Vieaux and harpist Yolanda Kondonassis will perform a program of new and traditional music by Hovhaness, Montsalvatge and Pujol on Oct. 26 as part of the Slee/Visiting Artist Series presented by the Department of Music.
The concert, which also will include the world premiere of a new work by Keith Fitch, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.
As part of his visit to UB, Vieaux also will conduct a master class at 11 a.m. Oct. 27 in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus. It is free and open to the public.
Vieaux, who has been called “among the elite of today’s classical guitarists” by Gramophine magazine, has earned a reputation for performing a remarkably wide range of music. This year’s performances have included return engagements to the Caramoor Festival and New York’s 92nd Street Y “Guitar Marathon.” On the 2012-13 schedule are concertos with the Houston, Toronto, Spokane, Augusta (Ga.) and Silicon Valley symphonies, as well as duo recitals with Kondonassis and accordion/bandoneon virtuoso Julien Labro.
Kondonassis is widely regarded one of the world’s premiere solo harpists, performing around the world as a concerto soloist and in recital.
Since debuting at age 18 with the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, she has appeared with major orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, including the Cleveland Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Dallas Symphony, New York Chamber Symphony, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra and the Buffalo Philharmonic.
The Department of Music’s October concert schedule also will include a second concert of the year by the Slee Sinfonietta, UB’s professional chamber orchestra in residence.
The concert, presented in conjunction with The Robert & Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in Lippes Concert Hall.
The Sinfonietta, conducted by Daniel Bassin, music director of the UB Symphony Orchestra, will perform a program that begins with “De Kooning,” a piece written by the late UB faculty member Morton Feldman for the documentary “Willem de Kooning, The Painter.” The Sinfonietta then will present György Ligeti’s “Trio for violin, horn and piano,” subtitled “Hommage à Brahms” in reference to the “Brahms Horn Trio” that has the same instrumentation.
Also performing on the Ligeti piece will be Yuki Numata, violin; Adam Unsworth, horn; and UB faculty member Eric Huebner, piano.
The second half of the program includes Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Kreuzspiel,” which the composer regarded as his first original composition; Witold Lutosławski’s third version of his “Dance Preludes,” the last of his works to be influenced by Polish folk music; and Tristan Murail’s “Vues aériennes.”
Advance tickets for both concerts are $12 for the general public; $9 for UB faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens; and $5 for students. At the door, tickets are $20, $15 and $8. Tickets can be purchased at the Slee Hall box office, at the Center for the Arts box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets, including Ticketmaster.com.
