UB Sculptors

Faculty and student show, including work in bronze, stone, wood, and fabricated metal, through Sept. 26 in the Art Department Gallery located in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Free admission.

One angel vs. a dozen demons

John Lekay's sculpture installation "Delires de l'ange neutre" is on display through Sept. 17 in the First Floor Gallery of the Center for the Arts, North Campus. The installation consists of 12 demons and an angel, sculpted in paradichlorobenzene and encased in airtight plexiglas boxes. The artist will be present to discuss his work today at 4 p.m., after which there will be a reception. Regular UB Art Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.- 8 p.m., and Sunday 12-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Witty surrealist

Alfonso Volo is a poet and an artist whose work is on view through Nov. 5 in the University Gallery, Center for the Arts, North Campus. He may embrace clichÚs. According to one blurb, "Volo's hairy eyeballs, lively blue tongues and active spermoid forms suggest the biological underworld writ large in a sexual, procreative script." This is a dual-site exhibit presented in collaboration with the Big Orbit Gallery. Volo will give a poetry reading, followed by a reception, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. in the UB Gallery.

Simon Ungers' site-construction "Red Vertical" remains on view through Dec. 31 in the Lightwell Gallery in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. The piece "explores the interaction between art and architecture."

All are invited by Recreation & Intramural Services to meet instructors and try Step, Slide, Funk, and Roping at the R&I Aerobic Kickoff, Friday from 4-7 p.m. in the Triple Gym of Alumni Arena on the North Campus. Admission is free. Also scheduled is a Dyno Workday Workout Seminar, Oct. 25 from 5:15-7 p.m. in Room 21 of Alumni Arena. The seminar will focus on ways to develop 10-minute workouts at the desk and during breaks. A $20-fee includes instructional material and a Dyno Band. The R&I Services Aerobic/Fitness Program runs Sept. 11-Dec. 16, and includes hour-long Super Toning sessions (fee $48) at noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Alumni Arena Dance Studio, and at noon Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the Clark Hall Dance Studio on the South Campus. Introduction to Aerobic Fitness for Faculty & Staff (fee $48) is scheduled at noon for an hour Tuesday and Thursday in the Alumni Arena Dance Studio. Fitness Check-In (fee $25) is held Saturday from 9-10:15 a.m. in Alumni Arena Dance Studio. For information about these R&I programs call 645-2286. Program director is Tressa Gorman Crehan.

Gaining library skills

The Health Sciences Library offers a seminar, Introduction to HUBNET (Hospitals and University at Buffalo Library Resource Network) & Searching the Bibliographic Databases, Sept. 7 through Nov. 30 in the Media Resources Center of the Health Sciences Library on the South Campus. The hour-long sessions are held Mondays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. Other classes include World Wide Web Using MOSAIC on HUBNET, Sept. 27, Oct. 31, and Nov. 8; Searching Full-Text Resources on HUBNET, Oct. 3, Oct. 18, and Nov. 28; Connecting to HUBNET from Home or Office, Sept. 12 and Nov. 14; and E-Mail on HUBNET, Sept. 28 and Oct. 24. UGL has BISON workshops

The Undergraduate Library (UGL) in Capen Hall is offering hour-long BISON workshops Sept. 12 at 3 p.m., Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., Sept. 18 at 3 p.m., and Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. Workshops are held in 127 Capen. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites applications for fellowships for study and research in Germany for the 1996-97 academic year. Craft Workshops about to start

The Creative Craft Center, 120 Fillmore, Ellicott Complex, North Campus, is offering Early Fall '95 Craft Workshops beginning Monday. Children's classes also are offered. For more information, call 645-6125 or 645-2434.

English Language Program

The English Language Institute at UB is offering a part-time, evening English language program designed for international professionals, scholars, students and homemakers whose first language is not English. The following courses are offered: Advanced Communication for the International Professional, Living and Working in English (Intermediate), Accent Reduction Course, TOEFL Preparation Course. Host Families Sought

The UB International Friendship Program is looking for local host families to provide overnight lodging for members of the Pendyrus Male Choir from Wales, which will perform in Buffalo at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Ave. Choir members range from their early 20s to their 70s. Hosts, who will receive two free tickets to the concert, should be prepared to take two or three guests. To participate, call 883-5804 by Sept. 10.

New Music Course Offered

The Music Department is offering a new course, Introduction to Electronic Music, which will cover the earliest uses of electronic instruments in the so-called "Western Art Music Tradition," as well as some of the uses of this music in film and recent techniques and practices in the field. Students are required to do listening assignments in the Music Library as well as some reading assignments. There are no books for this class.
