Some 1,500 runners, joggers, racers and walkers are expected to participate in the sixth annual Linda Yalem Memorial Run to be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, on the North Campus. The 5K annual event remembers a UB student who was assaulted and murdered in 1990 while running near campus while in training for the New York City Marathon. Proceeds will support the Linda Yalem Memorial Scholarship Fund and campus safety programs. Beginning at 10 a.m., it starts and ends near Alumni Arena. The race is part of The Buffalo News Runner of the Year Series. Advance registration is $12 and must be paid by Sept. 29. The race-day registration fee is $15. The fee for UB students is $10. Participants who pick up their race packets on Friday, Sept. 29, between 4 and 7:30 p.m. will receive a coupon redeemable for two tickets to the UB vs. Villanova football game to be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in UB Stadium. Every participant will receive a safety giveaway item and a race T-shirt. Participants also will be eligible for a drawing for a trip for two to the New York City Marathon, including airfare, accommodations and finish-line seating. One trip will be awarded to a UB student participating in the run and one to a non-UB student. Prizes will be awarded to the overall male and female finishers in the open division, as well as the top three male and female finishers in 13 five-year age categories. There also will be prizes for a wheelchair category and for top race walkers. Separate prizes will be awarded for UB finishers in five categories.
