FOOTBALL Villanova ground out 227 yards against the Bulls' third-ranked rushing defense en route to a 28-3 win over UB Saturday to make Andy Talley the alltime winningest coach in Villanova history. Backup quarterback Clint Park's 52-yard touchdown pass to Josh Dolbin with :30 left in the third quarter made it 21-3 to put the Bulls (2-3) away and allowed Villanova (1-3) to win its first game of the season. Talley now has a 66-41-1 record in his 11th season at Villanova. The Wildcats defense allowed only 243 net yards. Terrence Fisher led UB's defense with 13 tackles, including two quarterback sacks and a pass breakup. Gerald Carlson tied a UB school record when he connected on a 52-yard field goal in the first quarter. That tied Bernie Weber's previous mark vs. Canisius on Oct. 8, 1983. VOLLEYBALL The Royals saw their nine-match winning streak snapped, rallying from a two games to none deficit to force a fifth and deciding game but could not complete the comeback, falling to Cornell in five games last Wednesday night at Alumni Arena. The Big Red downed the Royals 15-11, 15-12, 13-15, 12-15, 15-12. Candie Hirst led the Royals with 24 kills along with 15 digs. Laurie Santelli contributed 14 kills and a team-high 18 digs while Aprille Sweeting added 11 kills and 10 blocks. Two other Royals, Candi Sims and Kathy Brinkworth tallied double-figure blocks with 11 each. UB concluded the weekend on a down note dropping all three matches at the Eastern Illinois University Ramada Invitational to currently stand at 13-7. The Royals lost the opener to Syracuse 15-2, 15-11, 15-8 on Friday and fell Saturday to Eastern Illinois 15-7, 15-10, 15-10 and Western Illinois 9-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-7. Hirst accounted for 26 kills and 26 digs in the three matches while Sims added 60 assists with Brinkworth collecting 16 blocks. MEN'S SOCCER The Bulls had a rough week dropping a pair of matches and tying another to put their record to 5-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference. UB tied Oneonta 2-2 in Oneonta on September 25 as Ugo Okpewho and Sebastian Zawislan tallied the goals with Dan Ciolek assisting on both. The Bulls returned home to face Siena on Friday dropping a heartbreaker 1-0. The winning goal was scored in the 89th minute of play off of a Siena corner kick. Sunday, the Bulls opened their Mid-Continent Conference schedule with a rematch of last season's Mid-Con Championship match against Central Connecticut State. CCSU took the match by a lopsided 5-0 score with freshman Paul Wright, the league's top goal producer, scoring twice. WOMEN'S SOCCER Lopsided matches were the order of the weekend as the Royals ran into a strong Penn State squad in State College Friday night 7-0. The Nittany Lions outshot the Royals 40-1 in the match as Penn State's Rachel Hoffman and Joanne Connolly scored two first half goals each to lead the team. Nikki Pittaro stopped 22 shots in the loss. Sunday, the Royals returned home to RAC Field to hammer Central Connecticut State 8-0. Lori Perillo led the team netting the hat trick with three goals while Kathleen Magner assisted on two of Perillo's goals. Pittaro needed just five saves to record the shutout. The Royals are now 4-2-3 this season. CROSS COUNTRY The Bulls and Royals met some stiff competition at Saturday's Miami University Cross Country Fall Classic as UB's women finished third in a six-team field while the men were seventh in a seven-team field. Gretchen Welch was the Royals' top finisher completing the 5K course in 19:04 to place 12th. Charlie Moynihan's 14th place finish in 25:54 in the men's 8K race was the Bulls' top finisher. WOMEN'S TENNIS The Royals remain undefeated with their 9-0 fall record as UB downed Siena 9-0 on Friday and Pittsburgh 6-3 on Sunday. Stacey Gargan, Wemillie Arellano, Amy Cohen and Annulett Dillon each registered two victories in the weekend matches to lead the Royals. MEN'S TENNIS The men's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend downing Siena 7-0 while dropping their first match of the season, 4-3, vs. Duquesne. The Bulls are now 9-1 on their fall season.
