Andre Pam rushed for a career-high 201 yards on 29 carries including a 79-yard touchdown run to break a 3-3 tie early in the third quarter to lead Maine to a 19-6 win over the University at Buffalo on Saturday night.

Pam combined with Bob Jameson-who had a career-high 113 yards on 22 carries-to help the Black Bears roll up 372 yards on the ground to improve to 2-3 on the season. The Bulls fell to 2-4 on the season.

UB had two second-half possessions inside the Maine 10-yard line but got only three points. Tailback Anthony Swan, who finished with 91 yards on 19 carries, was stripped at the five-yard line with 11:09 left in the third quarter with Maine's Bert Rich falling on the ball. Later in the quarter, UB had a first-and-goal at the Maine two but had to settle for a 25-yard Gerald Carlson field goal.

Junior Craig Guest had a career-high 29 tackles, 17 solo, for UB, including an interception. Pete Conley added 16 tackles for the Bulls.

The game was tied 3-3 at halftime despite Maine holding a 182-92 edge in total offense and a 21:25-8:35 edge in time of possession.

Carlson opened the scoring for the Bulls with a 27-yard field goal with 8:02 left in the half. Maine tied it on Chris Binder's career-long 48-yard field goal with 2:05 left in the second quarter. UB had a 49-yard touchdown run by Swan called back by holding in the second quarter and also lost two fumbles in the half.

VOLLEYBALL

UB opened their Mid-Continent Eastern Division schedule Friday with a four-game loss to host Youngstown State 15-12, 15-9, 12-15, 15-13. Candie Hirst collected 20 kills and nine digs while Laurie Santelli added 16 kills and nine digs. The Royals picked up their first conference win and stopped a six-match losing streak with a 15-1, 15-11, 15-5 victory over Central Connecticut State. The Royals also scored a hard-fought five-game victory over Troy State to now stand 15-9 overall and 2-1 in the league. UB downed the Lady Trojans 15-5, 10-15, 15-13, 10-15, 15-11 as Hirst led the way with 23 kills and 15 digs.

Earlier in the week, the Royals dropped a three-game decision to Colgate 15-10, 15-9, 15-10 at Alumni Arena. The Royals were led by Hirst's 13 kills and seven digs. Kathy Brinkworth added eight kills and four blocks while Candi Sims tallied 22 assists and four blocks. The Red Raiders got 14 kills from Autumn McKenzie with Julia Civardi adding 10. Tory Rodger collected 26 assists.

MEN'S SOCCER

The Bulls picked up a 2-1 win over Northeastern Illinois Saturday at the Mid-Continent Eastern Division cluster matches at Central Connecticut State. Sotir Tanevski scored the game-winner on a penalty kick with 1:36 remaining in the second half to lift UB to the win. The Bulls also got a goal from freshman Sebastian Zawislan with an assist from Ediru Okpewho.

UB knocked off Valparaiso 2-0 on Sunday to move into second place in the division. Rich Bachman registered a goal and an assist while Joe Mercik added a goal for the Bulls. Jay Palmer picked up his fourth shutout of the season, needing only three saves in the effort.

The Bulls are now 7-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-Con. UB has a long rest ahead of them as they return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 vs. St. Bonaventure at RAC Field at 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Royals used seven different goal scorers to extend their record to 5-2-3 with a 7-1 victory over Niagara University at RAC Field Saturday afternoon. The Royals, who outshot the Lady Eagles 12-9, got the go-ahead goal 14:04 into the match as Joanna Tower's direct free kick sailed into the net past Niagara goalkeeper Heather Boardway giving UB a 1-0 lead.

UB tacked on a second goal just before the half as Lori Perillo knocked in a rebound in front of the Niagara net at 42:34 for the 2-0 halftime edge.

In the second half, UB got goals from Annamaria Gasbarra, Beth Costello, Dana Talerico, Aimee Mann and Jennifer Devita. Talerico and Gasbarra also picked up second half assists.

Niagara's lone goal came from Amber Hutton off an assist from Gina Prinzevalli.

Senior goalkeeper Nikki Pittaro stopped seven Lady Eagle shots while Boardway had two saves for Niagara.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Bulls and Royals traveled to South Bend, Ind., to participate in the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational. The Bulls finished fifth in the men's gold division race with 188 points. The Royals placed 14th in the women's competition.

Chris Keenan was the Bulls' top finisher in the men's 8K race taking 15th in a time of 25:55.7. Charlie Moynihan was UB's next finisher in 24th at 26:08.6. Judith Novak led the Royals placing 22nd in 17:56.1 over the 5K course.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS

Both teams were washed out by the remnants of Hurricane Opal last Thursday forcing the cancellation of UB's matches against Canisius. Both teams face Robert Morris on Sunday at the University Tennis Club.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

It's that time again! The Bulls and Royals hold their annual "Midnight Madness" to tip off the 1995-96 basketball season Saturday night at Alumni Arena. A pre-event party will be held in the main foyer of the arena at 10:30 p.m. followed by slam dunk contests, three-point contests and team scrimmages beginning at midnight. Under NCAA regulations, no team can hold a formal practice prior to Oct. 15, so many schools hold their first practice at the stroke of midnight and open the practice to the public.
