Electronic Highways: Britannica Online

The University Libraries is pleased to announce the inclusion of the Encyclopaedia Britannica's Internet edition Britannica Online on its UB Wings web site. The Libraries site license permits members of the UB community with E-mail addresses ending with buffalo.edu to access: 1) articles from the 15th edition of the Britannica including illustrations and maps, 2) hundreds of new articles not yet appearing in the most recent printing of the Britannica, 3) text of the 1994 and 1995 editions of the Britannica Book of the Year, 4) flags, maps, articles, and statistics from Britannica's "Nations of the World," and 5) text of the 10th edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

Special features abound in this exciting addition to the University Libraries collection of electronic information resources. For example, "Britannica Classics" is a collection of classic articles from past editions of the Britannica such as the article on "Psychoanalysis" written by Sigmund Freud for the 13th edition. "Britannica Lives" presents a collection of biographies arranged by date of birth. "Random Access" makes a random pick of a Britannica article for you to read.

As an added feature the Britannica Online development team is constructing a search engine which, in addition to allowing its readers to use standard boolean searching techniques such as "ANDing" or "ORing" keywords, allows searching by natural language. For example, one can query "Why does the moon appear larger on the horizon?" Also, last but not least, Britannica Online provides links to additional resources on the Internet. The article on AIDS, for example, provides a direct Internet connection to the National AIDS Clearinghouse.

Search Britannica Online by typing wings at your UB E-mail system prompt, then select "Libraries," then the button, "Online Resources," and finally "Britannica OnLine." (For those who use a graphical www browser such as Netscape the URL is http://www.eb.com:180/eb.html.) For assistance in logging on to UB Wings contact the Help Desk in the Computing Center at 645-3542.
