WOMEN'S SOCCER Lori Perillo's unassisted goal with 5:19 remaining in regulation lifted the Royals past crosstown rival Canisius 2-1 on Oct. 20 at the Demske Complex. The win gave UB an 8-2-3 mark for the season. UB's Joanna Tower opened the scoring 5:44 into the match on a direct kick but the Griffins' April Wisniewski tied the match 13 minutes later scoring from the left side of the Royals' net. The match remained tied at 1-1 until Perillo scored her 10th goal of the season and 28th of her career. Nikki Pittaro stopped 10 shots to record the victory. The Royals conclude their season this weekend when they travel to Colgate to face the Red Raiders on Saturday, Oct. 29. CROSS COUNTRY The Royals and Bulls rolled to tri-meet victories at the Cornell Invitational over the weekend. The Bulls' Charlie Moynihan led the way finishing the 5-K course in 15:41 as UB took the top five spots defeating the Big Red 15-48 and Cortland State 15-50. On the women's side, Barb Rabinovici took top honors finishing the 5-K in 20:29 to lead the Royals past Cornell 21-34 and Cortland State 19-36. Earlier in the week, the Royals finished 10th at the prestigious National Invitational Meet at Penn State. UB totaled 260 points while Georgetown won the team competition with 43. Judith Novak was UB's top finisher placing 15th in 18:07 over the 5,000 meters. Julie Phelps also broke the 19-minute mark with her time of 18:48 to finish 44th. Both teams will compete in this weekend's Mid-Continent Conference Championships at Youngstown State University. The Royals are the defending Mid-Con champs and have won three consecutive conference titles including a pair of East Coast Conference championships. FOOTBALL The Bulls had an open week on the schedule as they prepare for a test at Hofstra this Friday night. UB's next home game is against NAIA power Central State of Ohio at UB Stadium on Nov. 4. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. VOLLEYBALL The Royals went 2-1 over the weekend visiting three of their Mid-Continent Western Division rivals. UB now stands at 18-11 overall. UB breezed past Chicago State 15-5, 16-14, 15-7 on Friday. Laurie Santelli had nine kills to lead coach Bob Maxwell's squad. Aprille Sweeting added three service aces as UB totaled 12 in the match. The Royals then fell to defending conference champion Valparaiso in three games 17-15, 15-12, 15-8. Candie Hirst had 15 kills and 10 digs in the match with Santelli adding 12 kills and 14 digs. UB concluded the weekend with a four-game victory at Northeastern Illinois 15-8, 15-4, 12-15, 15-4. Santelli registered 15 kills and 14 digs to lead the Royals past the Golden Eagles. Candi Sims had a strong match with 37 assists, 17 digs, eight blocks and three service aces while Kathy Brinkworth, the conference leader in block average, also had eight total blocks. Sweeting led the blockers with nine. The Royals host Robert Morris this weekend at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon and remain home for the remainder of the regular season hosting the Mid-Con Cluster on Nov. 4-5 and Canisius on Nov. 8. MEN'S SOCCER The Bulls split a pair of Mid-Continent Eastern Division matches over the weekend to put their record at 8-7-1 and 3-2 in league play. Chris Klink's goal at the 74:08 mark lifted the Bulls past Northeastern Illinois Saturday afternoon in Chicago. Ediru Okpewho earned the assist on the goal, a 25-footer from outside the box. Jim Schoenberg earned a shutout in his collegiate game stopping seven Golden Eagle shots. The match was played under rainy conditions with sleet mixed in at times causing for a muddy field. UB then suffered a setback as the Bulls were defeated 2-1 at Valparaiso on Sunday. Valparaiso's Bryan McCullough scored the first goal for the Crusaders just 2:05 into the match. Keith Cable extended the margin to 2-0 scoring at the 26:57 mark before UB's Dan Ciolek scored the Bulls' only goal at 37:51. Schoenberg stopped three shots. UB outshot the Crusaders 32-8. The Bulls concluded their home schedule on Oct. 18 dropping a 2-1 decision to St. Bonaventure at RAC Field. David Servello scored two goals for the Bonnies to lead the team to the win. Servello opened the scoring in the first half with his first goal 11:15 into the match off an assist from Chip Warner. St. Bonaventure led 1-0 at halftime. The Bulls rallied to tie the match at 51:16 as Mike Bongino registered a goal off an assist by Sotir Tanevski. Both players were among six seniors in uniform at RAC Field for the final time. Servello hit the game-winner just 45 seconds later unassisted to give the Bonnies the 2-1 lead. UB had several chances to tie the match including a pair of direct kicks that sailed high over the crossbar but could not get another marker. The Bulls outshot the Bonnies 13-10. Chris Barletta had eight saves for the Bulls while Walter Valesky had seven for St. Bonaventure. MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS Again Mother Nature played a role in the weekend's tennis action as rain and winds forced the postponement of the UB Fall Classic. Both teams have had strong fall seasons with Joe Davis' women's squad currently holding an undefeated 11-0 mark. Stacey Gargan leads the Royals singles players with a 10-0 mark this fall at number five while Amy Borden is 10-1 overall at number four. The Bulls are currently 9-1 for coach Russ Crispell. Mike Proulx remains undefeated in singles play at 9-0 seeing action at numbers two, three, and four. Three Bulls, Bill Parks, Wadie Kawar, and Andrew Garber, are each 8-1.
