FOOTBALL

Gerald Carlson's three field goals including the game winner with 1:58 to go gave the Bulls a 9-6 win over defending NCAA I-AA champion Youngstown State at Stambaugh Stadium Saturday. "To beat Youngstown in Youngstown with their tradition and reputation obviously means a lot for this program," said head coach Craig Cirbus. Carlson's 36-yarder capped a 10-play, 36-yard drive that included a pair of Mark Taylor to Keith Warren third down conversions.

Carlson got the scoring started on the final play of the first quarter with a 39-yard field goal to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. UB gained the field position for the kick following a 19-yard punt by Carlson which was mishandled by Youngstown State's Jabari Teague and recovered by UB's Adam Tardif at the YSU 24. UB held the lead through the second quarter going into the locker room with a 3-0 advantage.

The Bulls got their second field goal on the first drive of the second half. Carlson's 34-yarder into the wind extended the Bulls' lead to 6-0. The Penguins answered on the next drive as quarterback Mark Brungard hit Jake Smallfield in the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. The score remained tied at 6-6 as placekicker Jon Dorma, who had not missed an extra point all season, hooked the attempt wide to the right. Buffalo's defense held tight the remainder of the game, stopping the Penguins in UB territory the next three possessions including taking over at their own 14 after Brungard threw a pair of incompletions.

UB, now 3-7, concludes their 1995 season at home Saturday when they host Boston University at 1:30 p.m. at UB Stadium.
