Electronic Highways: Buffalo on the Web

One of the most useful offerings on UB Wings is the School of Architecture and Planning's web site. Not only does the site have much to offer those who teach and study in the school with its "Description of Degree Programs," "Directory of Faculty and Staff," "Planning and Architecture Internet Resource Center" and "Graffiti Wall" where Architecture & Planning students and staff can communicate regarding their research interests, it presents the rest of us with worthwhile information on Buffalo and the Niagara Frontier.

At the core of this local information is "Buffalo on the Web" which is somewhat of a misnomer because there is material on all of "Upstate New York" as well as Ontario's Niagara Region in addition to the City of Buffalo. "Buffalo on the Web" includes descriptions of tourist attractions, direct links to local college World-Wide Web sites such as Canisius College, the University of Rochester and McMaster University. Media web sites such as the radio station WGR 55 and the television station WKBW Channel 7 with a drawing of Irv Weinstein as the hypertextual icon are listed. Internet provider home pages from the not-for-profit Buffalo Free-Net to the commercial LocalNet are there as well.

One of the most interesting places on "Buffalo on the Web" is the "Oneida Nation Home Page" which is not only informative regarding the Oneida Nation but also provides Internet links to other Native American nations such as the Sioux Nation in South Dakota as well as other Native American resources on the Net. Finally, for the sportsminded among us "Buffalo on the Web" offers links to a variety of web sites devoted to the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres.

The creator and webmaster of the School of Architecture and Planning web site is Dan Tasman. If you have access to a graphical browser such as Netscape and want to get a feel for Net humor click on his name to tour "Dan's Upper Flat" and the "Virtual Cheektowaga."

To reach the School of Architecture and Planning web site in its text only version type wings at your UB E-mail account system prompt and type the URL http//:www.arch.buffalo.edu/index.html at the Go command. To express directly to "Buffalo on the Web" use the following URL: http//:www.arch.buffalo.edu/buffalo/hbuffalowww.html. Naturally those using graphical browser such as Netscape will use the same URLs.
