Murray S. Howland Jr. clinical professor of medicine A memorial service was held Nov. 17 in Westminster Presbyterian Church for Murray S. Howland Jr., 84, who had served as a clinical professor of medicine and gastroenterology at the UB medical school since 1937. Howland died Nov. 14 in his Snyder home after a brief illness. Founder of the Buffalo Medical Group in 1946 with three other physicians, Howland retired in 1990 and became associate medical director of Hospice Buffalo. During his illness, he was cared for by the Hospice Buffalo team at his home. A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Medical School, Howland served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II in Africa, Italy and France. A member of the American College of Physicians, the Erie County and state medical societies and the Alpha Omega honor society, he was the recipient of many honors for his educational, civic and medical contributions, including the Distinguished Service Award of Buffalo General Hospital's Junior Board.
