Digital art

"Digital Messages: Vision, Revision, and Precision," a show by Communications Design and Computer Art students and faculty, opens Feb. 29 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. in the Art Department Gallery, Center for the Arts, North Campus. The show, which is up through March 14, presents "images and words of wit, canniness and folly in various digital media."

Seeing nature

"Perfect World," a group show, features work of Vincent Shine, Laura Stein, Gregory Crewdson, David Nazio, and Ronald Jones, through March 15 in the University Art Gallery located in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. Gallery hours are 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and Noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Topped by fish tanks

"Dumping Sight: Landscape/Landscope," an exhibit by Satoru Takahashi, is the exhibit through March 17 in the University Art Gallery, Center for the Arts, North Campus. The exhibit is "a complex architectural-sculptural work consisting of two separate revolving doors made of reflective glass with fish tanks as ceilings." Takahashi is a Japanese artist living in New York City. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday, Noon-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Fresh paint

New paintings and drawings by Walter Prochownik are on view through Feb. 23 in the Art Department Gallery located in the Center for the Arts, North Campus. The show is presented on the occasion of Prochownik's retirement from the UB Dept. of Art. Gallery hours are Tuesday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Admission is free.

A year in Lightwell

Leonardo Drew's site-specific installation "No. 45-A" was designed for the Lightwell Gallery in the Center for the Arts, North Campus, and now is lodged there through Dec. 20.

Photos of churches

"Building and Landscape: Byzantine Church Buildings in Greece," a show of photographic works by Jonas Lehrman, is on view through March 8 in the James Dyett Gallery, 335 Hayes Hall, South Campus.

Black History Month

"The Legacy of Arthur A. Schomburg" is on display through March 15 in Lockwood Memorial Library, North Campus. The traveling exhibition of photographs and reproductions of manuscripts explores the global history and culture of black people, whose heritage Schomburg dedicated his life to preserving. The exhibit also traces the evolution of the Harlem-based research center that bears his name. There is a reception Feb. 29 from 3-5 p.m. in Lockwood.

Art elsewhere

Tyrone Georgiou and James Pappas are represented in the show "Works by African-American Artists from the Collection" through April 13 in the Up-Front Gallery of the Burchfield-Penney Art Center located in Rockwell Hall on the Buffalo State College campus, 1300 Elmwood Ave. The exhibition has been organized to recognize the achievements of Western New York artists during Black History Month. Georgiou has three small-scale photograph and sculpture dioramas in the show; the composition by Pappas is a jazzy graphite drawing. Burchfield hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 1-5 p.m., Sunday. Voluntary admission is $3.

Men on rape-a contest and a poster

The Anti-Rape Task Force is sponsoring a contest, "UB Real Men," and invites men on campus to submit their "thoughts on rape and sexual violence and how to end it." The best submissions, with photographs of the winners, will be used for a poster showing that "real men care about ending sexual violence."
