Charles W. Pankow, 82, oral surgeon, dental school associate professor

A memorial service will be scheduled in May for Charles W. Pankow, an oral surgeon who taught his specialty and served as an associate professor in the UB School of Dental Medicine. Pankow, 82, died April 1 in his Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., home after a lengthy illness.

Pankow served as chief of the oral surgery department at Buffalo General Hospital until his retirement in 1978, when he moved to Florida. He had also been an assistant attending oral surgeon and consultant with the former E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo; Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw; and Genesee Memorial and St. Jerome Hospitals in Batavia.

A graduate of the UB School of Dental Medicine, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II as a major with the 23rd General Hospital.

A fellow of the American College of Dentists and the American College of Oral Surgeons, he was also a member of the New York State Society of Oral Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the 8th District Dental Society, the Erie County Dental Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the Society of Military Surgeons and the International Society of Oral Surgeons.

Pankow received a number of professional awards and published articles in professional journals, including the Journal of Oral Surgery. A frequent conference speaker on new surgical techniques, he produced instructional films used throughout the world.
