The University at Buffalo men's and women's basketball teams are well represented among the national leaders in final statistics released this week by the NCAA.

Royals' guard Brenna Doty finished fifth nationally in three-point field goals made per game at 3.0. The junior from Rexford, NY, scored 94 treys in her 31 games. The average also was tops among Mid-Continent Conference members. Doty shot 39.8 from three-point range this season and had a career-high seven in the opener at Hawaii Dec. 1.

A staple among Sal Buscaglia-coached teams is field goal percentage defense with UB finishing seventh nationally in the category at 35.9. Last season, the Royals were 10th at 36.0. UB's scoring margin of 13.6 also placed them 14th.

As a team, the Royals, 23-8 this season, also ranked among the leaders in three-point percentage (seventh at 38.2) and three-pointers made per game (27th at 5.5).

Sophomore center Nicole Blakeslee, who set a Royals record with 70 blocked shots in one season, finished 21st nationally in blocks per game at 2.3. The Howell, Mich., native currently has 97 blocked shots to rank third in UB history.

The Royals also posted a single-game best when they defeated Valparaiso 87-71 on Feb. 19 by canning 66.0 percent of their field goal attempts. The Royals were 33-of-50 on the evening and the percentage was sixth highest nationally during the season.

Bulls' guard Mike Martinho finished among the men's leaders in three-pointers per game ranking 12th at 3.5. The sophomore from Rahway, NJ, is UB's all-time leader with 157 career treys. Martinho drained 10 against Troy State on Feb. 22, tying him for third for single game three-pointers.

Freshman Bernard Wheeler was tied for 27th with 2.4 steals per game. Wheeler, a 5-10 guard from New York, was one of only two freshmen on the list. He led the Bulls with 66 steals and had a career-best six three times.

ANDERSON DRAFTED BY USBL TEAM

Bulls senior Jamie Anderson was selected last week by the Connecticut Skyhawks of the United States Basketball League (USBL).

Anderson, a 6-7 forward from Milford, Conn., was the Skyhawks' third pick in the territorial draft. Anderson was selected by the Connecticut entry behind UConn's Rudy Johnson and Massachusetts' Dana Dingle. Anderson averaged 13.4 points per game and 5.0 rebounds this season for the Bulls as a senior co-captain.

Anderson was second on the team with 61 three-pointers and was named to the All-Tournament team at the Utah State Classic in December. An exceptional athlete, Anderson transferred to UB from Keene College, where he led the nation in scoring as a sophomore. He led the Bulls in scoring on 10 occasions this past season and scored a career-high 28 points against Mississippi Valley State.

MEN'S TENNIS

The Bulls swept a pair of matches over the weekend with a 4-3 win over Robert Morris and a 5-2 decision over Mid-Continent rival Youngstown State.

Steve Dahm and Pradeep Rabala won at numbers one and three respectively in the win over the Colonials. Dahm defeated Marc Brezina 6-2, 6-1 while Rebala rallied to defeat Chris O'Brien 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Mike Proulx at number two and Joe Hamilton at number six captured wins over the Penguins. Proulx downed Youngstown's Zach Veres 6-2, 6-4 while Hamilton took his first singles victory of the season with a three-set win over Kamal Khanna 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Dahm moved up to first singles due to the injury of co-captain Wadie Kawar, who was out with a fractured foot. Kawar had been named Mid-Con Player of the Week after his stellar play during the Bulls' spring break matches at Hilton Head Island, SC. Kawar was third in the league in first singles with an overall spring record of 7-3.

"This is the biggest loss this season for the team," said head coach Russ Crispell. "He has been the hottest sports player at UB this spring season and to lose him is a great loss."

The Bulls hope to have Kawar back for the upcoming Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. The tourney runs Thursday through Sunday in Montgomery, Ala.
