Engineering to note 50th anniversary

AN ADDRESS by the chair of the National Academy of Engineering, a national bridge-building competition hosted by UB engineering students and special programs with local high schools will highlight the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS).

Founded in 1946, the school will kick off its golden anniversary celebration at commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 18, with a special presentation by Interim Dean Mark Karwan. It will conclude with a banquet and commencement ceremonies in May, 1997.

A 19-member committee composed of engineers from academia and industry, faculty members-some of whom have been with the school since its inception-and engineering school representatives has planned special events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Western New York's only engineering school.

Charles Fogel of Buffalo, professor emeritus of engineering, is chair of the committee.

Events planned for 1996-1997 are:

  • National steel bridge-building competition: May 24-25

  • Health-care industry trade show, followed by a lecture by Raymond Damadian, president of Funar Corp., who invented and holds a patent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Oct. 3. The trade show is co-sponsored by the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the Western New York Health Care Industries Association.

  • Luncheon for university and industry representatives with lecture by Norm Augustine, chairman and chief executive officer of Lockheed-Martin Corp. and chair of the National Academy of Engineering: Oct. 30

  • High-school programs with the engineering school: Feb. 22

  • Concluding banquet, with prominent alumnus speaker to be announced: May 10, 1997.

    Traditional events that will be featured as part of the year-long celebration include a student picnic on Sept. 4, and a tailgate party on Homecoming weekend and the Engineering Alumni Reunion and Recognition Dinner, both in October.

    Also to be featured will be Engineers' Night for UB Basketball on Feb. 15, engineers' week in February, the engineering scholarship reception and concert on April 9, and commencement on May 17, 1997.

    Other members of the golden anniversary committee are Robert E. Barnes, associate dean of external affairs for the engineering school; Michael Colyer, a graduating UB engineering student; John Davis, president of I Squared R Element Co., Inc.; Richard Gallagher, president emeritus of Clarkson University; Wilson Greatbatch, president of Greatbatch Gen-Aid, Ltd.

    Also, Interim Dean Karwan; George C. Lee, Samuel P. Capen Professor of Engineering and director of the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research; Daniel Kaegebein, president of TX RX Systems Inc.; Daniel E. Massing, associate director of technology transfer services at UB; Frederick Meli, president of Meli Associates; William D. Niblock, sales manager at R.P. Adams Co., Inc.

    Also, Frank Notaro, manager of research and development at Praxair, Inc.; Michael E. Ryan, associate dean, undergraduate student services at the UB engineering school; James Seng, assistant dean for development at the engineering school; Barbara Doedline Sherman, lecturer at Buffalo State College; Howard E. Strauss, professor emeritus of mechanical and aerospace engineering; William Swenson, assistant dean for alumni relations at the engineering school, and Thomas W. Weber, professor of chemical engineering.
