ART HISTORYStringcourse Awards Donovan Gow, a bachelor's degree candidate in art history, won the undergraduate Stringcourse Award for a paper titled "Erwin Panofsky, Iconology and the Art Historian." The paper discusses the work of Panofsky, one of the great figures in the field of architectural history. He is noted for his erudition and invention of iconology-the study of artistic images, emblems and symbols. Irene BrÄckle, a master's degree candidate in art history, received the graduate Stringcourse Award for her paper, "The Mnemonic Dimension of Pilgrimage Accounts," which examines pilgrimage accounts written by 12th century European travelers for evidence of how they constructed their memories. The annual awards carry a cash prize made available through a scholarship fund endowed by Edna and Arthur Randorf of Williamsville. Student Honors Donovan Gow and Jennifer Scott, were given memberships to Phi Beta Kappa. In addition, Gow was named an outstanding senior by the Dean's Office in Arts and Letters.

ATHLETICSWomen's basketball player Brenna Doty and wrestler Jason Wartinger were named the University at Buffalo's female and male Athletes of the Year at the annual sports banquet at Samuel's Grande Manor. Doty, a junior, won the award for the second consecutive year. The 5-7 guard earned first team All-Mid-Continent Conference honors for the second year in a row after averaging 16.3 points per game in leading the Royals to a 23-8 mark. She became just the seventh player in school history, and the first as a junior, to score 1,000 points in a career. Doty's 1,216 points places her second on the all-time list. A Dean's List student, Doty also ranked first in the league and fifth nationally in three-point field goals made per game. Wartinger, in his first season with the Bulls' wrestling program after transferring from Hofstra, keyed the team's turnaround to a 10-4 dual meet mark in 1995-96. Wartinger compiled a 35-6 individual mark, including a 14-0 record in dual meets-only the eighth athlete to go unbeaten in dual competition in a season. He also won the New York State Championship in the 126-pound weight class and qualified for the NCAA meet by winning the East Coast Wrestling Association title at 118 pounds. Wartinger was defeated in the first round of the NCAA meet by eventual champion Sheldon Thomas of Clarion and was 1-2 at the event. Tara Reimer of women's cross country and track and field earned the Clifford C. Furnas Award. The Furnas Award is given to a student-athlete who excels both athletically and in the classroom. The Quantum Leap Award, presented annually by University at Buffalo Director of Athletics Nelson Townsend, was won by the wrestling team. The award is given to the team that shows the biggest improvement in one season. The 1995-96 team, under first-year head coach Jim Beichner, was 10-4 in dual meets and qualified two members for the NCAA meet. Other team awards are listed below. Clifford C. Wilson, Peter Zaremba Jr. Dean's Award The Dean's Award for Outstanding Engineering Achievement, the School of Engineering's highest honor presented annually to a person who has made an exceptional contribution to the practice of engineering, is given this year to Anthony L. Russo. Russo, an expert in the field of mechanical engineering, retired last year from his posts as executive director of Calspan-University at Buffalo Research Center (CUBRC) and as vice president of Calspan Corp.'s Advanced Technology Center. In 1990, Russo was named executive director of CUBRC, which grew substantially under his leadership, obtaining significant funding blocks in support of important engineering research. He also has been closely involved with undergraduate and graduate engineering students at UB, serving as an industry counterpart to the academic faculty advisor. He is an active member of the Dean's Advisory Committee for Technical Communication, and a devoted mentor to engineering students. Prior to his appointment as executive director of CUBRC, Russo was director of the Franklin Research Center (FRC) in Philadelphia. With that exception, he has been a resident of Western New York, and an employee of Calspan (formerly Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory), since 1952. Starting as a research engineer/scientist, in 1981 he was named head of Calspan's Transportation Research Department. Russo is author or co-author of more than 40 articles and reports. He was the principal investigator of high temperature machinery research, in which he oversaw the design, fabrication, testing and development of a state-of-the-art device for producing steady flows of very high temperature gases for various applications. He has participated in atmospheric pollutant dispersion research, and was involved in the design, testing and development of nonsteady flow engines for lightweight simple power plants. Russo's work also has included research and development in the fields of gasdynamic research, rocket research and hydrodynamic research. He is a member of the Technical Committee for Terrestrial Energy Systems, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, as well as a number of professional organizations, including Sigma Xi, the American Railway Engineering Association and the Society of Automotive Engineers. Russo is director of the School of Engineering's Delta Society, and is active in a variety of community activities. He served for five years on the Iroquois Central school board, including one year as president. He has been a high school and college tutor and has interviewed candidates for the U.S. military academies. Russo received his B.S. cum laude in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame; he did graduate work at Cornell University and received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UB in 1969.
