BULLS BIG PLAYS RIP RAIDERS 36-16
The Bulls improved to 2-1 on the season on the strength of big plays and special teams in a 36-16 win at Colgate last Saturday.

UB led by just 9-7 late in the first half when quarterback Mark Taylor hit junior flanker Jamie Gasparre for a 24-yard TD strike on 4th-and-2 with :20 remaining in the half. That score was set up by a 39-yard interception return by senior defensive back Bill Tipton.

The Bulls took control of the game as the Taylor-Gasparre connection struck again after Colgate had cut the UB lead to 16-10. Taylor hit Gasparre on a 70-yard strike to put the Bulls in control to stay. Fullback Todd Pace added two touchdowns while junior tailback Anthony Swan had 117 yards on 19 carries offensively.

Gasparre led the Bulls with 140 yards on just five catches, an average of 28 yards per reception. Defensively Craig Guest led the way with 10 tackles to become just the second player in UB history to record 350 tackles in a career. The all-time leader is former teammate Pete Conley who had 376. Steve McDuffie forced two fumbles and Dan Poulsen had a pair of recoveries.

The Bulls special teams came through all during the game as Tipton blocked a field goal, senior Mike Chichester blocked his second punt of the season setting up a Pace touchdown, and senior kicker Gerald Carlson booted three field goals and averaged 48 yards per punt.

Tipton earned national honors over the weekend winning NCAA Division I-AA Independent Defensive Player of the Week award. It was the second time in three weeks that a UB defender has earned the honor. Chichester took the award in the season's opening week for his play against Illinois State. Taylor matched his career-high in passing by connecting on 16-of-26 passes for 218 yards.

The Bulls hit the road again for a contest at Lehigh on Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
