Paula, partying and a pre-game parade­plenty to please the crowd at Parents/Homecoming Weekend

The Division of Athletics is reintroducing a homecoming parade as part of its celebration of the university's sesquicentennial.

Starting at 9 a.m. at the LaSalle rapid-transit station, it will proceed on Main Street to Allen Hall on the South Campus.

President and Mrs. William R. Greiner, the grand marshals, will be joined in the parade by Tammy Harris, a 1996 graduate of UB who is Miss New York State.

Other dignitaries expected to participate are Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello, Erie County Executive Dennis Gorski and University District Councilman Kevin Helfer.

Music will be provided by the UB Pep Band, as well as by marching units, including the Gordon Highlanders Bagpipe Band and Color Guard, the Cornell University marching band, a unit from Lancaster High School, the Shrine Band and the Oriental Shrine Band.

In addition to floats and antique cars, the parade will feature vehicles from the Buffalo Fire Department, Amherst Police Department and UB Department of Public Safety. Marchers will include members of UB's intercollegiate athletic teams, the UB cheerleaders, clowns, mascots from local professional sports teams and corporate sponsors.

The Office of Alumni Relations will hold a tent party at 10 a.m. prior to the homecoming football game, in the end zone of University Stadium. Featured will be a brunch, as well as entertainment by student groups. To purchase tickets, contact Debra Palka, Office of Alumni Relations, at 829-2608. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

The homecoming football game between the UB Bulls and the Cornell Big Red will kick off at noon. The game, originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m., has been moved up because it will be broadcast live by the Empire Sports Network. Tickets for the football game are available at 645-6666 (829-2608 for alumni).

Paula Poundstone, who has tickled America's funnybone as a guest on the "The Tonight Show" and "The Late Show With David Letterman," will perform in concert at 8 p.m. in Alumni Arena. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets for her peformance, sponsored by the Office of Student Life in the Division of Student Affairs, are available through UB Student Union Ticket Office, 645-2353; Center for the Arts Box Office, 645-ARTS, and Ticketmaster outlets (852-5000).

Check-in for parents weekend will be in the lobby of the Student Union from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and 9-11:30 a.m. on Oct. 5.

Parents/homecoming events Oct. 4 will include a bonfire and pep rally at 8:30 p.m. on the lawn of Goodyear Hall, South Campus. Sponsored by the undergraduate Student Association, they will be followed by a carnival in the Townsend Hall parking lot.

The Campus Ministries Association will host a coffee reception at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 5 in Suite 109, The Commons, North Campus. A Shimini Atzeret Yizkor Memorial Service and Kiddush luncheon, sponsored by Hillel, will be held at 10 a.m. in the Campus Center for Jewish Life, Suite 210, The Commons.

In addition to educational presentations beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., sponsored by the Office of Student Life, there will be escorted tours of campus sites, including the Center for the Arts, Fisk Organ in Slee Concert Hall and the Pharmacy Museum and Apothecary, leaving from the Student Union at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. An open house is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by the Marian F. White Museum and archaeological survey in 261 Fillmore, Ellicott Complex. Parents Weekend concludes Sunday, Oct. 6, with a brunch at 10 a.m. in Pistachio's in the Student Union.
