BULLS STEAMROLL ENGINEERS 34-20 At LEHIGH UNIVERSITY
A dominating running game and a pair of defensive touchdowns led the UB
Bulls to an impressive 34-20 victory at Lehigh University, the defending
Patriot League Champions, last Saturday.
The Bulls racked up a season-high 348 yards on the ground with running backs Anthony Swan and Todd Pace each going over 100 yards in the same game for the second time this season. Swan had 29 carries for a career-high 215 yards and scored the game-clinching touchdown. Pace had 127 yards on 22 totes and also scored once.
Despite giving up 479 yards in the game, the Bulls defense forced five turnovers, taking two of them to the end zone. Cornerback Bill Tipton scored UB's first touchdown, picking off an Aaron Brown pass and returning it 89 yards for the score-one yard off the UB record. Trailing 20-17 in the fourth quarter, senior Steve McDuffie sacked Brown, forcing a fumble that nose guard Keith Hansen scooped up and returned 48 yards for the go-ahead score. Hansen had two sacks, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and a pass breakup in the game, while linebacker Craig Guest led the Bulls with a season-high 19 tackles. Anthony Scott added two quarterback sacks and a forced fumble for the Bulls.
Swan and Hansen earned NCAA I-AA Independent Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. It was the second consecutive week and third of four weeks that a UB player has earned the defensive award. Tipton and Mike Chichester have garnered the award previously. It is the second time in four weeks that a Bull has earned the offensive award. Pace earned the recognition against Illinois State.
The Bulls host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member Edinboro for a 7 p.m. kickoff at UB Stadium on Saturday.
ROYALS VOLLEYBALL DOWNS SYRACUSE
The Royals pulled off one of the biggest wins in school history rallying
from two games down to defeat Syracuse 3-15, 7-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-9
Wednesday Sept. 18 at Alumni Arena.
UB's rally began when Syracuse decided to rest a couple of starters in the third game. The Royals grabbed the momentum led by freshman Somer Deschambault who tied her career high with 44 assists in the five-game match. At the net, the Royals were led by senior Candi Sims and junior Kathy Brinkworth, who had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Sophomore Aprille Sweeting added nine kills and four blocks.
Following the win over Syracuse, the Royals dropped four matches at the East Tennessee State Invitational over the weekend to put their record at 6-9. Sophomore Amy Burda earned All-Tournament recognition with 41 kills, 52 digs and three service aces. Both Burda and Sims picked up 20 kills in the five-game loss to the host Buccaneers. Deschambault also eclipsed her career-high set a few days earlier with 48 assists vs. East Tennessee State. The Royals will host Canisius at Alumni Arena at 7 p.m. Oct. 2.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Royals cross country team, the defending Mid-Continent Conference
champions, traveled to London, Ontario to take part in the Western
Ontario
Invitational, downing 13 American and Canadian schools. The Bulls
finished
fifth of 13 in the meet.
UB's women finished with 90 points, 27 ahead of second place Guelph. Stacey Strothmann finished fourth individually along the 5K course in 18:15.8 to lead the Royals.
Chris Keenan's 10K time of 33:13.8 was the Bulls' top finish, good for 11th place individually. Both squads compete on Saturday in the Kent State Invitational.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
UB's women's soccer team opened a two-game road swing over the weekend
with
a 5-0 loss at Boston College.
A tight 1-0 contest through most of the match slipped away from the Royals as Boston College scored four unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes to take the win. UB goalkeeper Joanne Chillingsworth stopped 15 shots in the contest.
UB rebounded Sunday with a 3-1 at Stony Brook as Tricia DiQuattro, Nicole Tresino and Beth Costello scored markers for the Royals, now 3-3-1.
The Royals a pair of contests this weekend starting with a Friday night clash with Pittsburgh at RAC Field beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday UB hosts Valparaiso at noon.
MEN'S SOCCER
The Bulls dropped to 0-6-1 with a pair of losses this week to Canisius
(2-1) and Siena (1-0).
In the loss at Canisius, UB took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Frank Butcher scored the goal in the 13th minute off a pair of passes from Tristan Burton and Brian Meyer.
UB played the second half down one man as Ediru Okpewho picked up a red card in the 43rd minute and was disqualified from the match. The Bulls stepped up their defense in the second half but the Griffins scored the deciding goal in the 80th minute to take the 2-1 lead.
Coach John Astudillo's club is on the road this weekend playing in the Florida Atlantic Tournament in Boca Raton. UB takes on the University of Central Florida on Saturday and faces the host Owls on Sunday.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S TENNIS
Rain on Sept. 17 moved the men's and women's tennis matches against St.
Bonaventure indoors to the Hilton Hotel. The Bulls fell 5-1 to put their
fall record at 3-2 while the women were defeated 6-1 evening their fall
mark to 2-2.
Coach Russ Crispell's Bulls picked up a singles win at number six as Andrew Garber defeated Drew Crawford 6-2, 6-4. Garber also teamed with Orrin Pridgen to take the number three doubles 8-3.
The Royals picked up a singles win at number 5 as Amy Snyder downed Sara Mortimer 6-1, 6-1.
Both teams host this weekend's UB Fall Classic at the University Tennis Center. Canisius, St. Bonaventure and Niagara are also in the tournament field.
