"Contemporary Concepts in Esthetic Dentistry," Douglas Lambert, specialist in esthetic and sports dentistry, Oct. 10.

"The Art of Endodontics: Concepts and Techniques for the New Millennium," L. Stephen Buchanan, leading expert in endodontics and faculty member of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, Oct. 11.

Barbara J. Steinberg, professor of medicine and surgery, Allegheny University of the Health Sciences and clinical associate professor of oral medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, will present two half-day seminars Oct. 10. on "A Team Approach to Treating the Medically Compromised Patient," from 9 a.m.-noon, and "Medical and Dental Considerations of the Female Patient," 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Sessions also will be offered on managing oral complications of cancer treatment; dentistry's role in the prosthetic reconstruction of head and neck injuries; a history of dentistry through art, film and photography; radiographics; using the intraoral video camera; infection control and hazardous chemical exposure, and computerized esthetic imaging.

EOC DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAM REACCREDITED
The dental assisting program in UB's Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), 465 Washington St., has been reaccredited for seven years by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

The commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.

Preparation for the accreditation involved faculty, staff and advisory committees at the EOC, the UB School of Dental Medicine and dental-medicine professionals.

Some 500 students have completed the two-semester, tuition-free program during the past 25 years. About 95 percent of graduates are placed in jobs, primarily in hospital and university-based dental clinics and private dental offices.

SRIHARI NAMED FELLOW OF INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION
Sargur N. Srihari, professor of computer science at UB and director of UB's Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR), has been named a fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. Fewer than 50 of the association's 1,000 members have been named fellows.

Srihari was cited for his contributions to character recognition and document-understanding systems.

As director of CEDAR, Srihari supervises and conducts research in developing methodologies, algorithms, software and hardware with a focus on machines that can read.

A member of the UB faculty since 1978, Srihari is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has co-authored several U.S. patents, as well as a book on computer text recognition.

He received bachelor's degrees in physics and mathematics from Bangalore University and a bachelor's degree in electrical communication engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He received master's and doctoral degrees in computer information science from Ohio State University.

GREEN RECEIVES WOMEN HELPING WOMEN AWARD
Sharon Green, instructor in Women's Studies, was a recipient of the 1996 Women Helping Women award given by the Buffalo and Erie County Chapter of the National Organization for Women. She received her award for teaching "Women in Contemporary Society," through Millard Fillmore College, for 22 semesters, writing essays, articles and editorials on women's issues for various publications and coordinating events to celebrate Women's History Month at D'Youville College, where she is a reading and writing specialist in the Learning Center.

STUDY SEEKS ADULTS WITH DIABETES, KIDNEY DISEASE
Adults ages 30-70 with Type II diabetes mellitus, kidney disease and high blood pressure are needed to help UB researchers evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medicine to treat diabetic kidney disease.

The two-year study is being conducted by Theodore Herman and partners of Nephrology Associates of Western New York. Herman is clinical associate professor of medicine at UB and chief of the Nephrology Section in the Department of Medicine at Millard Fillmore Hospital.

Participants will receive free study-related physical exams and laboratory, urine and EKG tests. They will be reimbursed $575 for time and travel expenses upon completion of the study. Those interested in participating should call Patricia A. Topolski, 882-3452.

29 NAMED TO LAW SCHOOL DEAN'S ADVISORY COUNCIL
The UB School of Law has appointed 29 distinguished alumni and friends of the school as members of its newly established Dean's Advisory Council.

The Council will meet twice a year to assist the dean and faculty in the development of policies and plans for the law school.

Council chair is Gerald S. Lippes recipient of the 1995 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award, highest honor bestowed by the law school and the Law School Alumni Association. He also is chair of the university's Regional Advisory Board, a trustee of the University at Buffalo Foundation and a member of the President's Board of Visitors.

LEVY CHAIRS COMMITTEE AT HEBREW UNIVERSITY
Gerhard Levy, UB Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics, has been appointed by the president of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem to serve as chairman of an international visiting committee to review graduate and undergraduate programs of the university's School of Pharmacy. He will assess the school's research programs and work with the faculty on development plans for the school.

7 ALUMNI TO BE HONORED BY SCHOOL OF NURSING
Seven alumni of the UB School of Nursing will be honored for outstanding contributions to the field of nursing at a dinner and ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in the Center for Tomorrow.

The ceremony will be the culmination of a day-long celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the nursing school. Those to be honored are:

Georgia M. Burnette, B.S. '55, M.S. '81, former director of nursing for Roswell Park Cancer Center and Buffalo Psychiatric Center; Michael D. Fallacaro, M.S. '84, D.N.S. '93, co-director of the UB nurse anesthesia program and member of the New York State Board of Nursing. Jane J. Fielding, M.S. '63, former administrator with the NY State Nursing Association; Marjorie A. Hagberg, B.S. '63, M.S. '67, former director of Erie County Medical Center's nursing program and a longtime ECMC nursing administrator.

Also: Hazel H. Harvey, B.S. '35, UB associate professor of nursing administration from 1950-75; Sharon G. McGrath, B.S. '84, founder and executive director of C.O.P.I.N. PHARMACY STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS
Three fourth-year students at the UB School of Pharmacy have been awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Women's Club Fund of the Columbia University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The recipients are Daniel Hom, Charles Lapp and Michael Van Ornum.

ARTWORK DONATED BY LAW FIRM ON DISPLAY
A New York City law firm has donated a 74-piece artwork collection, valued at $80,000, to the University at Buffalo Art Gallery.

Donated by Sidley & Austin, the collection features works by well-known artists, including Dennis Oppenheim, Michael Kenna, Lita Albuquerque, Grace Knowlton and Dan Graham. An exhibit of photographs, prints and textiles from the collection was held recently in the gallery, which is under the auspices of the UB Faculty of Arts and Letters.

"The academic and surrounding community will have the opportunity to view various distinctive pieces by many outstanding artists," said Jack Brimm, director of administration for the New York branch of Sidley & Austin, headquartered in Chicago.

SIGGELKOW IS AUTHOR OF NEW BOOK
Richard A. Siggelkow, UB professor emeritus of counseling and educational psychology, is the author of a new book, The Unmaking of A College President, published in Sanborn, NY. Siggelkow's book is a fictional account of how four inside candidates compete for a college presidency that is desired also by others not officially in the chase.

Siggelkow, who spent 48 years in higher education, served under five presidents at the University at Buffalo, retiring in 1992. He received his Ph.D. in counseling from the University of Wisconsin in 1953, where he taught and served as associate dean of the school of education. He came to UB in 1958. In addition to 50 articles in educational journals, he authored Dissent and Disruption: A University Under Seige (Prometheus Books) in 1991.

HOWARD WOLF TO SPEAK AT AMHERST COLLEGE
Howard Wolf, UB professor of English, will speak Nov. 18 at Amherst College under the auspices of the Amherst Library. The talk, "Autobibliography, a Place in Time: On Shaping a Collection," and an exhibition will mark the 25th year of a collection that Wolf has been building in the Special Collections unit of the Amherst College Library since 1971. Wolf , a graduate of Amherst, received an M.A. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

The collection includes writings, published and unpublished, of a number of UB's literary faculty members past and present, including Professor Carl Dennis; Lyle Glazier, professor emeritus and Mac Hammond, professor emeritus.

Included are descriptive letters, personal and historical, so the collection blends autobiography with bibliography and constitutes what Wolf calls an "autobibliography," as well as a social history of the American literary academy during the period 1950-2000

Among the items in the collection are signed gift books, small magazines, Indian dissertations about American literature, correspondence of overseas scholars who were visiting faculty at UB, Fulbright Scholars or American Council of Learned Societies fellows (Dr. Devindra Kohli, Dr. Biyot Tripathy, Xiao Anpu);letters of Amherst College contemporaries, exchange of letters between the collector and curator, the collector's own manuscripts and published works, and correspondence with editors and publishers.
