BULLS STOP SCOTS 17-7
The Bulls posted an important 17-7 win over Edinboro University Saturday night at UB Stadium thanks to an opportunistic defense and some great special-teams work. The win was the 300th in school history and marked the first time that UB had defeated the Fighting Scots. It gave UB a 4-1 record this season including a three-game winning streak, longest since 1992.

The Bulls trailed 7-0 when the Fighting Scots took the opening drive 80 yards for a score. Edinboro had 185 yards in the first half but was limited to just 52 after intermission and to 29 yards of net rushing. The Bulls responded as kicker Gerald Carlson broke the school record by nailing a 54-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3. Carlson also averaged 42.0 yards per punt on the night, including a career-best 79-yarder.

The Bulls took the lead for good when quarterback Mark Taylor hit freshman flanker Drew Haddad from seven yards out. It remained that way until senior cornerback Mike Chichester stepped in front of a Chris Hart pass and raced 51 yards down the near sideline to put the game away for the Bulls.

Senior linebacker Craig Guest broke the school record for tackles in a career with 15 stops, moving past '96 grad Pete Conley. Guest now has 384 tackles. Freshman Dan Curcione added a career-high 13 tackles while noseguard Keith Hansen had 11 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Defensive end Steve McDuffie had two fumble recoveries and nine stops.

ROYALS SOCCER DROPS PITT, VALPARAISO
The Royals are riding a three-game winning streak following weekend victories over Pittsburgh and Valparaiso. UB is now 5-3-1 overall. Coach Jean-A. Tassy's squad downed Pittsburgh 6-3 Friday night in a driving wind and rain storm that made for sloppy play at RAC Field. The Royals picked up two goals from Kelly Starchok and a goal and a pair of assists from Kathleen Magner in the victory.

Pitt opened the scoring early in the first half as Vanessa Madison directed a shot past UB's Joanne Chillingsworth to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Royals immediately responded as Nicole Tresino found net on a breakaway giving Magner her first assist of the night.

Magner gave the Royals the lead for good, 2-1, when her corner kick sailed into the net past Pitt goalie Sarah Stout. Starchok then scored her first goal assisted by Leanne Ricci. Starchok collected her second goal early in the second half on an assist by Magner. Tracey Britton added a penalty kick goal in the half to increase the lead. UB outshot Pitt 17-10. Chillingsworth stopped four shots while allowing two goals in 71 minutes of action while Mary Morgan played the final 19 minutes stopping one shot and allowing a goal.

On Sunday senior captain Lori Perillo, who missed Friday's match due to back spasms, returned to the lineup scoring two goals and adding an assist in UB's 6-0 win over Valparaiso.

Magner added a goal and two assists while the goal-keeping tandem of Chillingsworth and Morgan held the Crusaders scoreless. Chillingsworth picked up the win in goal for UB, stopping five shots in 80 minutes.

Tricia DiQuattro opened scoring on an assist from Magner. Perillo then scored her first of the game assisted by Magner. Perillo added an assist on the Royals' third goal scored by Dawn DelGuidice. In the second half, Perillo netted her second of the game off an Allison Branca assist. Magner scored and Anna Ventresca netted the final goal of the match assisted by Gina Tatusko. The Royals are back in action Friday when they host Colgate at 7:30 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL
Coach Bob Maxwell's Royals broke their four-match losing streak Sept. 25 when they rallied to down St. Bonaventure in five-games at the Reilly Center. The win moved the Royals to 7-9 overall. UB got strong play offensively and defensively from junior middle hitter Kathy Brinkworth, who registered a team-best 15 kills with just one hitting error and an incredible .500 hitting percentage. On defense, she had 12 total blocks.

Amy Burda also tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Burda also added four service aces and four blocks. Candi Sims had eight kills and a team-high 17 digs while Somer Deschambault added 39 assists. The Royals have three matches this weekend, a Friday night clash at Alumni Arena against Duquesne at 7 p.m., then UB travels to Ithaca to face Hofstra Saturday and Cornell on Sunday.
