Lockwood exhibit celebrating Sesqui shows UB book treasures

"Treasures from the Lockwood Library-An Exhibit Celebrating UB's Sesquicentennial" is on view in seven display cases on the second floor of Lockwood Library. Curator for the exhibit is Timothy Conroy.

The exhibit, which features books of the 20th century, all "excellent examples of book art," according to the curator, demonstrates the visual beauty of the book and the printed page, with an accent on fine printing, fine paper and typography.

Books in the collection, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s, were all selected from the stacks. Many are limited editions, including a number from Thomas B. Lockwood's private collection and some from UB's Art-Music collection, later integrated into the Lockwood collection.

Some of the highlights include intricate wood engravings in several books by Eric Gill, David Jones, Eric Ravilious, Robert Gibbings and Paul Nash; the magnificent calligraphy of typeface designer Hermann Zapf and a stunning Alfred Stieglitz photograph of Georgia O'Keeffe from a catalog published by the National Gallery of Art.

The exhibit will be on view until Dec. 20.
