Trailing 20-17 in the fourth quarter, senior linebacker Craig Guest jarred the ball loose from New Haven receiver Tyrone Seabrooks late in the fourth quarter and senior quarterback Mark Taylor-in the finest game of his career-brought the Bulls back.
Taylor hit junior flanker Jamie Gasparre, who had a career-high 11 catches for 155 yards, with a 30-yard touchdown strike with 4:29 left. Taylor finished with career-highs in completions (26), attempts (42) and yards (411) and threw three touchdowns. The Bulls twice came back from second-half deficits to claim their second straight win.
Tailback Anthony Swan became just the third Bulls player to go over 1,000 yards in a season with 104 yards on 20 carries. Swan now has 1,056 yards on the season and added three catches for 60 yards in the game. Sophomore Kali Watkins added six catches for 127 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown strike from Taylor for the Bulls.
Defensively, the Bulls forced four New Haven turnovers as cornerback Mike Chichester led the way with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Adam Tardif added nine tackles, while
Anthony Scott had seven tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Cornerback Steve Blake (career-high), Craig Guest and Bill Tipton all added seven tackles for the Bulls. Tardif, Scott, Guest and Tipton all forced fumbles for the Bulls.
VOLLEYBALL
The Royals traveled to Kansas City where they split a pair of matches,
rallying to defeat Mid-Continent West Division foe UMKC in five games and
falling to nationally ranked Oral Roberts in three.
In the win over the Kangaroos, UB overcame a two-games-to-one deficit downing their hosts 15-10 in the fourth game and 15-13 in the rally-scoring fifth game. Amy Burda came up big for coach Bob Maxwell's Royals, leading the way with 16 kills. Candi Sims and Kathy Brinkworth also added double figure kills with 12 and 10 respectively. Brinkworth also accounted for eight blocks. Freshman Christina Gianino, playing in place of the injured Somer Descham-bault at setter, led the Royals with 35 assists and 12 digs.
UB was overpowered by a strong Oral Roberts club in just 47 minutes falling 15-5, 15-2, 15-4. Sims led the Royals with seven kills, six digs and four blocks.
UB will have this week off as they prepare for the Mid-Continent Conference tournament in Valparaiso, Ind. UB, the second seed in the East Division, will meet West Division leader Valparaiso in the opening round. Troy State and UMKC face off in the other semifinal. The winner of the tournament moves on to the NCAA Play-in round to face the champion of the Ohio Valley Conference.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING
The University at Buffalo men's swimming team defeated St. Bonaventure
146-90 at the Alumni Arena Natatorium Saturday to raise their record to 2-0
in dual meets. The Royals lost to St. Bonaventure 185-115 in a dual meet
Saturday also at the Alumni Arena Natatorium to drop to 1-1 in dual meets.
Korry Miller paced the Bulls in their victory taking the 200 Individual Medley (1:57.20) and the 200 backstroke (1:53.10). Miller also was part of UB's winning 400 Medley Relay squad in 3:32.45. Freshman Aaron Roof was also victorious in a pair of freestyle races, taking the 50 in 21.94 and 100 in 47.98. Roof anchored the Bulls' winning 400 free relay squad in 3:13.06.
In the women's meet, UB diver Andrea Skillman won both the 1-meter (241.80) and 3-meter (272.25) competitions. Alexandra Barrera took the 200 backstroke for the Royals in 2:10.56 while Lieselle Trinidad took the 100 butterfly in 1:00.13.
The Bulls are off until Dec. 6-7 when they travel to the Notre Dame Invitational. The Royals host Niagara on Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. for their next action.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Royals opened their exhibition season Saturday night with a convincing
87-52 win over Official Sports of Canada at Alumni Arena.
UB never trailed in the contest as they opened an early 6-0 lead and didn't look back, holding a double-digit lead much of the contest. The Royals led 43-33 at the half. Official Sports cut the margin to eight, 45-37, early in the second half, but UB then went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes to widen the gap and coasted to the easy victory.
Four Royals scored in double-figures, led by preseason All-Mid-Continent selection Brenna Doty with 21 points. Megan McCray netted 19 with Charissa Gardner adding 12 and Alicia Kollmorgen scoring 10 and leading the Royals with eight rebounds. Catherine Jacob had 10 assists while Latoya Crumpton, playing her first contest in a Royals' uniform after sitting out last season as a transfer from Penn State, had nine points and six boards in just 15 minutes of action.
UB concludes their exhibition schedule on Sunday, hosting the Buffalo All Stars, a group of former Western New York collegians including many from UB. The contest tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the final men's exhibition vs. Marathon Oil at 7:30 p.m. The Royals open their regular season on Nov. 23 at Alumni Arena against Cornell.
MEN'S SOCCER
The Bulls completed their 1996 season with a 2-0 loss to Colgate University
in men's soccer action Tuesday at UB's RAC Field finishing with a 2-13-2
mark.
Josh Viel scored both Colgate goals on unassisted markers. Viel tallied his first goal just 4:35 into the match as his shot hit the left goalpost and caromed past UB goalkeeper Justin Deming. Viel scored his second goal at the 78:39 mark.
Deming made his first collegiate start in the match making six saves in the contest. UB outshot Colgate 15-11 with Red Raider keeper Jeff Lipman stopping nine Bulls shots.
Although the Bulls did not reach the postseason, several players were honored with All-Mid-Continent Conference East Division honors. Senior midfielder Joe Mercik and junior midfielder Tim Merrick picked up first-team recognition, while sophomore backs Brian Cruickshank and Doug Geller and junior goalkeeper Jim Schoenberg made the second-team.
MEN'S TENNIS
Two players represented coach Russ Crispell's Bulls at last weekend's Rolex
Intercollegiate Tennis Championships in Princeton, N.J. The doubles team of
Mike Minter and Mike Proulx won their first-round contest, defeating
LaSalle's John Colfer and John Elder 8-3. The duo fell in the second round
to Virginia Tech's number two doubles team of Andrew Krafft and Mark Tepes
8-1. Minter was eliminated from the singles tournament in a 6-2, 6-4
decision to Mike Passarella of Harvard.
