Martinho finished with 20 points, but it was Rasaun Young who rallied the Bulls from an 11-point deficit in the final 5:31 of regulation to force the overtime. Young tied his career high with 34 points and nailing 14 of his 17 free throws, scoring 11 of his points during the run.

Scott McMillin's three-pointer with 1:53 remaining gave the Bulls a 63-62 lead and UB built the advantage to three at 67-64 on a free throw by Young with 14 seconds left. Niagara's Jeff O'Connor sent the contest into the extra session with a three-pointer with two seconds remaining.

Martinho took over in the overtime, scoring seven points on three-of-four shooting, to lead the Bulls to their first win of the season. UB needed to rally from four-point deficits twice in the extra session to take the victory.

Earlier in the week, the Bulls traveled to Cornell falling to the Big Red 70-62. Young paced the Bulls with 15 points while Martinho added 13 and McMillin and Matt Clemens scored 10 each. McMillin was also high rebounder with eight. The Bulls opened the season with a 78-61 loss at Miami of Florida. Martinho had 20 points, with all six of his field goals from behind the three-point line while also pulling down six rebounds. Young added 18 points in his first game since the 1994-95 season, after sitting out last season as a medical redshirt.

The Bulls have a pair of contests scheduled for the Marine Midland Arena this week as they take on St. Bonaventure in a Big Four contest on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 12:30 p.m. UB's marquee game at the Marine Midland Arena is Tuesday, Dec. 10 against national runners-up Syracuse at 8 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Royals are off to a 2-0 start after their first week of the season. UB opened the year with a 76-62 win over Cornell at Alumni Arena on Nov. 23. The Royals then hit the road for the first time, downing Northern Iowa 75-67 on Nov. 26.

In the win over Cornell, Brenna Doty had the hot hand for the Royals, leading the team with 23 points, including six three-pointers. Doty also accumulated three steals as UB registered 15 steals for the game, forcing 32 Big Red turnovers. Charissa Gardner added 16 points and eight rebounds. LaToya Crumpton also had eight rebounds off the bench for the Royals. UB actually shot better from outside the three-point arc (45.0 percent) than from inside the line (40.3 percent).

At Cedar Falls, Iowa, the Royals won the contest from the free-throw line as Doty sank all eight of her attempts, including six in the final minute to ice the contest. Doty was held scoreless in the first half by the Panthers but finished the game with 12 points. UB shot 86.2 percent (25-of-29) from the free-throw line in the game. Catherine Jacob led the Royals with 14 points (12 in the first half) while Kim Coon added 10 off the bench. Gardner topped the team with seven rebounds and six assists.

UB hosts Louisville in their next action at Alumni Arena on Sunday, Dec. 8 and opens their Mid-Con slate with Central Connecticut State at Marine Midland Arena on Dec. 10.

VOLLEYBALL
Coach Bob Maxwell's Royals completed their 1996 season with a three-game loss to eventual champion Valparaiso in the semifinals of the Mid-Continent Conference Volleyball Tournament in Valparaiso, Ind., on Nov. 23. UB finished the season with an 18-16 mark, including a 5-1 record in the Mid-Con's East Division.

Senior outside hitter Candi Sims led the Royals with 15 kills in her final collegiate match for the Royals. Sims also garnered All-Tournament recognition as well as netting All-Mid-Continent East Division First-Team honors for the third consecutive year.

The Royals placed five on the league's All-East Division squad. Sims and middle hitter Kathy Brinkworth were named to the first-team, while Somer Deschambault, Aprille Sweeting and Amy Burda received second-team honors.

WRESTLING
The Bulls wrestling squad opened their 1996-97 season Nov. 23 at the Bloomsburg Invitational in Pennsylvania. UB had nine place-winners, taking third overall in the meet.

Senior John Stutzman led the Bulls with his victory in the 150-pound weight class. Stutzman defeated Drexel's nationally ranked (18th) Billy Brown in overtime in the semifinals before decisioning Duke's Conway Harris for the title.

Jason Wartinger at 118 pounds and Eric Gross at 177 also advanced to the finals of their respective weight classes, but failed to capture titles.

The Bulls are on the road at Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, Dec. 7. Their first home meet is Jan. 5, when they host Rider.
