BULLS LIGHT UP LEATHERNECKS TO EARN SECOND PLACE
The Bulls shot a blistering 60.7 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from beyond the arc to down Western Illinois 95-85 Saturday to score one of their biggest road victories since joining the Mid-Continent Conference three years ago.

Western Illinois had won 26 of their previous 30 games at Western Hall before the Bulls came to town and improved to 9-6 and 4-1 in the Mid-Con. The loss dropped Western to 4-2 in the conference and 9-5 overall. The Bulls got outstanding games from Mike Martinho, Rasaun Young, Matt Clemens and Robert Harris.

Martinho hit 11-of-15 shots from the field en route to a season-high 30 points. Young had 23 points, while Harris added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls and had a monster slam dunk in the closing minutes to help clinch the win. Clemens added a season-high 14 points. After a home contest against Youngstown State Jan. 22, the Bulls hit the road for Mid-Continent clashes at Chicago State and Northeastern Illinois.

ROYALS FALL IN YOUNGSTOWN
Saturday's UB-Youngstown State women's basketball game was not decided until the final shot as the Royals fell in a 76-74 loss in Youngstown. UB is now 5-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference and 13-2 overall. With Troy State's 113-58 win over Chicago State Monday, the Trojans took over Mid-Con's top spot and dropped UB into a tie for second with Youngstown and Northeastern Illinois.

Shannon Beach's layup with just 3.7 seconds remaining gave the Penguins a 76-74 edge. UB immediately called timeout to set up a final play. YSU used a tight pressure defense as Catherine Jacob rushed the ball up the court, letting loose a Hail Mary shot that hit the front of the rim as the final buzzer sounded.

Brenna Doty and Kim Coon led the Royals with 13 points apiece. Charissa Gardner added 11 points, Blakeslee scored a season-high 10 points. Alicia Kollmorgen grabbed seven boards to lead the Royals.

The Royals head to Chicago for a pair of league matchups facing Chicago State Saturday and Northeastern Illinois Monday.

MARTINHO, COON EARN MID-CONTINENT HONORS
Junior guard Mike Martinho and sophomore guard/forward Kim Coon were selected as the Mid-Continent Conference's Men's and Women's Basketball Players of the Week, the conference announced Jan. 14.

Martinho reached the 1,000-point plateau Monday, becoming the 10th player in Bulls history to achieve the milestone. Martinho averaged 22.3 points in three games last week, including a season-high 29 Saturday against Missouri-Kansas City.

Coon averaged 16.1 points in three games for the Royals, leading the team to a 3-0 week. Coon came off the bench in two of the three games, including Monday's 91-75 win over Troy State where she scored 20 points and nailed four three-pointers.

BULLS SECOND AT STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cornell University had four state champions and placed four others on the podium scoring 168 points as they won their second consecutive NYS team title and third in four years over the weekend. UB, posting their best finish since 1978, captured second place with 127 points.

UB senior 150-pounder John Stutzman extended his winning streak to 22 bouts and captured his school-record fourth tournament win this season. Defeating Columbia's Brian McGuire 6-4 to take the title, he is now 24-1 and hasn't lost a match since November.

Senior 126-pounder Jason Wartinger also captured his second tournament title of the season as he successfully defended his state championship from last year. Wartinger also went 4-0 over the weekend, scoring a 6-5 win over Bob Hanson of Syracuse in the finals. RIT's Matt Hamill, named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, defeated UB's Eric Gross in the finals.

FOUR FOOTBALL BULLS EARN ALL-AMERICA STATUS
Four UB players, highlighted by senior defensive back Michael Chichester, earned spots on the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-American team. Chichester earned a berth on the first-team defense in an outstanding senior season, helping the Bulls to an 8-3 record, their most wins in a decade.

Also earning spots on Football Gazette All-American teams were linebacker Craig Guest (third team defense), offensive tackle Edward Ellis and tailback Anthony Swan-who both made the honorable mention offense.

Chichester played both cornerback and strong safety, and was a rock in the Bulls defensive secondary as well as on special teams. He was fifth on the team with 63 tackles, led the team in pass breakups and returned both of his interceptions for touchdowns against Illinois State and Edinboro. He blocked three kicks and had a pair of fumble recoveries in a stellar season.

Guest finished a brilliant career as UB's all-time leading tackler. He finished the year with a team-leading 136 tackles and tied the school record with four fumble recoveries. He leaves UB as the record holder for tackles in a game (29 versus Maine, Oct. 7, 1995), season (161, 1995) and career (446). He is the only Bulls player to ever record 400 or more tackles in a career and registered 100 tackles or more in three straight seasons.

Senior offensive tackle Edward Ellis and junior tailback Anthony Swan both earned spots on the honorable mention offensive team. Ellis, who has been gaining plenty of attention from pro scouts, allowed just one sack all season and helped the Bulls average 372.5 yards and 24.6 points per game.

Ellis was a big reason why tailback Anthony Swan became only the third player in UB football history to crack the 1,000-yard barrier. Swan rushed for 1,117 yards on a record 244 carries and scored nine touchdowns. He caught 16 passes for 172 yards, finishing the year ranked 29th in the nation in rushing at 101.55 yards per game. He went over the 100-yard barrier seven times this season, including a career-high 215 yards at Lehigh.

The Bulls, who will become a Div. I-A member in 1999 with their entrance into the Mid-American Conference, were ranked 27th in the final Sports Network poll and sixth in the final Lambert/Meadowlands Awards.

MEN'S SWIMMING
The Bulls traveled to Ohio Jan. 17 to face a tough Toledo team from the Mid-American Conference. UB dropped the meet 137-100 falling to 4-2 in dual competition.

Distance freestyler Mark Horgan was the Bulls' top performer, taking the 500-free in 4:45.88 and the 1000-free in 9:46.52. His time in the 1000 was his best of the season, slicing over a half a second off his previous best of 9:46.89. The time is also the fastest recorded by a Mid-Continent Conference swimmer this year.

Also winning for the Bulls were Kevin Jessop in the 200-butterfly in 1:58.11 and Korry Miller in the 200-IM in 1:58.37. The Bulls took the top three spots in the 200-IM, with Pat Quinlan finishing second in 1:59.94 and Jessop third at 2:00.27.
