Nayler accepts post at Northwestern

Ronald Nayler, associate vice president for university facilities since 1991, has accepted a position as associate vice president for facilities management at Northwestern University. He will be leaving UB at the end of March.

At UB, Nayler has provided leadership for a staff of 650 people responsible for all facilities-related services. Managing an annual budget of $35 million, he has supervised units responsible for facilities planning and design, construction management, space management, environmental health and safety, facilities operations and administrative services.

Nayler also has been responsible for leading UB's environmental efforts, as well as all campus planning activities, the campus-sponsored rehabilitation program, assignment of space and negotiation and management of all university leases.

Nayler spearheaded the university's $18 million energy-conservation project, the largest and most comprehensive such effort ever undertaken by a university in the United States. As part of the project, he negotiated new energy rates that have saved UB more than $2 million a year.

His other accomplishments at UB include overseeing design and construction of the new $54 million Biomedical Research Building on the South Campus.

"We will miss Ron at UB. He has provided a clear vision and strong leadership for university facilities. He has been an innovator and a superb manager," said Robert J. Wagner, UB senior vice president. "Even within a declining operating budget, he led an effort that improved the level of our service to our students, faculty and staff, and devoted increased resources to the training, career development and equipping of staff in university facilities.

"In addition, Ron is always willing to put institutional goals at the forefront. For all that he has done, Ron has our admiration and thanks."

Nayler came to UB from the University of Massachusetts in 1989 as assistant vice president for facilities planning and design.

According to Wagner, a committee will be formed shortly to fill the position of associate vice president for university facilities within the next four months. In the meantime, Michael Dupre, director of facilities and systems maintenance, will serve as acting associate vice president.

"Mike's talent and expertise have been recognized and appreciated by all who have worked with him," Wagner said. "Mike has been repeatedly promoted and asked to assume greater responsibility within Facilities. I am very pleased that Mike has agreed to take on this special assignment during that interim period."
