Richard A. Valente, clinical associate professor, UB dental school
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 3 in St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Eggertsville, for Richard A. Valente, who served as a clinical associate professor at the UB dental school from 1974 to 1984. Valente died in Buffalo General Hospital Jan. 29 after a long illness. He was 74.

Last year, Valente received the Humanitarian Award for outstanding public and professional service from the UB Dental Alumni Association.

Valente, who attended St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and Canisius College, graduated from the UB dental school and served in the U.S. Navy as a dentist during World War II. He saw service as a lieutenant at Bainbridge, Md. and Quantico, Va.

After the war he returned to Buffalo to open a private practice, which he maintained until 1993.

He was a member of the New York State Board for Dentistry from 1978 to 1988, serving as chairman in 1984 and 1985. He was also a member of the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners and the American Association of Dental Examiners for 18 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a dental consultant for Blue Cross of Western New York.

A life member of the American Dental Association, he received the Frank J. Stone Memorial Award in 1995 for outstanding service to the community from the Erie County Dental Society.
