National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy in April, 1996 as a time for publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools, and poets in the United States to "celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture." You may have noticed advertised events in the media. But for the first time, there is a central location for information about the numerous ways to celebrate poetry during April. You can find the National Poetry Month Web page at http://www.poets.org/npm/npmfrmst.htm.
The NPM Web site offers a multitude of ways to participate, making available links such as "Forums," "Resources," and "Literary Links." "Forums" offers discussion areas for booksellers, librarians, and teachers to share ideas on how best to promote poetry. The range of discussion areas makes this idea quite interesting. Also useful is "Resources," a page offering various indexes, a list of major poetry award winners, and a small selection of National Poetry Month posters.
From the National Poetry Month page, you can also link to the resources of the Academy of American Poets organization homepage, which includes poetry exhibits and the academy's calendar. "Poetry Exhibits" is a particularly interesting page and offers selections such as "Special Events," "Current Exhibits," "Archive," "Find a Poet," and a bookstore page.
This April, don't forget our rich local resources for poetry! The Electronic Poetry Center (http://wings.buffalo.edu/epc), a site featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education twice during the past few months, offers a large number of celebrated poetry resources. Are you up for a poetry conference? If you'd like to attend one of the most significant poetry events of the year, you might also wish to find out about UB's April conference celebrating the work of Louis Zukofsky (http://wings.buffalo.edu/epc/authors/zukofsky/april.html). Interested in community-sponsored resources? Try the ACORN Literary Arts page at http://freenet.buffalo.edu/arts/literary.
April doesn't have to be the cruelest month, not with the wealth of poetry at your fingertips!
