Center for the Arts to stage May events: percussionists, Grammy nominee to perform

The UB Center for the Arts will present two performances in May, with percussionists onstage May 4 and Grammy nominee Cassandra Wilson appearing May 9.

The International Artistic and Cultural Exchange Program of the UB Center for the Arts will present a free Percussion Recital on Sunday, May 4, at 8 p.m. in the Drama Theatre. The recital, sponsored by the U.S.-Mexico Fund for Culture, promotes cultural exchange among the artistic communities of Mexico and the U.S. and Percussion Mexico/USA, a project that aims to develop a closer musical exchange between the two countries.

The evening will include performances by Mexican composer and percussionist Antonio Fernandez Ros, Mexican percussionist Ricardo Gallardo and percussionist Kirk Brundage, a UB alumnus. Tickets are available at the CFO box office.

On Friday, May 9, the UB Center for the Arts presented Cassandra Wilson at 8 p.m. on the Mainstage. Known for her moody ballads, Wilson entices audiences with her rich alto voice and unique ability for improvisation. Recently, Wilson has shifted her approach to a mix of pop, blues and rock tunes expressed in a jazz/cabaret style. Her latest album is New Moon Daughter. Opening for Wilson will be jazz newcomer Madeleine Peyroux.

Tickets ($24, $20, $16, adults and $20.50, $17, $13. 50, students) are available at the Center for the Arts Box Office and Ticketmaster locations. The concert is sponsored by WBLK-FM.
