Lisa L. Hertel, 21, of Albion, a May graduate of UB, was killed June 13 when the car she was driving was hit by a minivan on Sweet Home Road between Rensch and Chestnut Ridge roads. A passenger in the car, Johanna M. Hill, 21, a UB pharmacy undergraduate, received head and internal injuries in the accident. She is in Erie County Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
According to Amherst Police Lt. Willard Tillman, the accident occurred at 10:20 p.m., when a northbound minivan driven by Gregory P. Ross, 18, of Williamsville, crossed the double yellow line into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the Hertel car. Ross was alone in the car. He was treated for injuries in the medical center and released. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
In a separate accident, undergraduate student Amanda Occhino, 22, of Buffalo, was sitting with friends watching the waterfall near the Deer Lick Falls section of Cattaraugus Creek in Persia, Cattaraugus County, when a log weighing more than 70 pounds was dislodged and fell more than 200 feet before striking her head. She died June 23 in Erie County Medical Center.
State Police found the person who may have dislodged the log, but have not said whether they think the individual knew that anyone was below at the time. Cattaraugus County District Attorney Michael P. Nevins is looking into the case.
