New look, print schedule for Reporter

Published: August 29, 2002

Dear Colleagues,

The Reporter begins the new academic year with a revised look for its print and online versions, as well as a new publication schedule.

The most significant change for the faculty/staff newspaper is that while a brand new issue will appear online each week from Aug. 29 to Dec. 5 and from Jan. 16 to May 15, a print version of the Reporter will be published and distributed on campus only every other week, beginning today.

The new publication schedule provides an opportunity for UB — as one of the top wired universities in the country — to take advantage of the latest in Web technology, at the same time that it helps to reduce production costs.

The front and back pages of the printed Reporter will sport a new, crisper look allowing for the display of more stories on both. The front-page design will vary from week to week, providing a fresh look along with the latest news.

The online Reporter, which was redesigned over the summer to be more appealing visually, as well as more user-friendly, will convey more information than is possible to offer in the print version due to space limitations, and will be updated during the week when major news breaks. Future plans call for expanding the online version to take advantage of Web capabilities, such as interactivity and linking readers directly to other Web stories and sites on the same or similar topics.

The online Reporter may be read at http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter. The site contains a search engine that allows exploration of all stories and features that have appeared in the Reporter in recent years since it has been published online.

If you wish to receive an email notification on Thursdays that a new issue has gone online, enter your email address and name, and click on "join the list" at: http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter/subscribe.

I welcome your comments and reactions to these changes either now or as the semester progresses. My email address is petro@buffalo.edu
