The Empire Sports Network will once again be home to "Bulls Football Focus," the only show in Western New York with highlights of each UB football game, as well as player interviews and analysis with head coach Jim Hofher. The show will be hosted by Paul Vecchio, assistant athletic director for communications, and will air on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on Empire, with the exception of the final show of the year, which will air on Thanksgiving Day at 7 p.m.

In addition, Hofher — as well as UB players and assistant coaches — will be featured each week on WGR-AM. A UB player or coach will be featured with Brad Riter each Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. and Hofher will join Kevin Sylvester and the Bulldog at 8:45 a.m. every Thursday. All UB football games can be heard on WGR-55, with Chris Brown and Kevin Sylvester on the call.

Also returning is coverage of all six of UB's home football games on Adelphia 13. UB's battles with Lehigh, Connecticut, Western Michigan, Miami (OH), Kent State and Central Florida will be shown on a tape-delay basis each week. WNSA's Rick Maloney will handle the play-by-play duties while Mark Collins will provide commentary and Jay Moran will work the sidelines.

The schedule for Adelphia 13:

  • UB vs. Lehigh (Aug. 29) — rebroadcast 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31; 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 1, and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2.

  • UB vs. Connecticut (Sept. 14) — rebroadcast 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16.

Football

UB will kick off the 2002 season at 7:30 p.m. today in UB Stadium against Division I-AA power Lehigh. The opener will be an extravaganza of sights and sounds. World-renowned announcer Michael Buffer — of "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" fame — will introduce the 2002 UB Bulls before the game and at halftime will introduce "The Rocketman," who will soar above the UB Stadium crowd. In addition, post-game fireworks will light up the sky. The event will be sponsored by Star 102.5 and The Buffalo News.

Volleyball

Women's

The Sally Kus era begins this weekend with the UB/Hampton Inn-vitational in Alumni Arena. Kus, one of the winningest high school coaches nationally, will make her Division I debut tomorrow as the Bulls take on Coastal Carolina at 8 p.m. UB pulls double duty on Saturday as they face Bucknell at 1 p.m. and close out the tournament with a match against crosstown rival Canisius at 6 p.m.

Soccer

Men's

The Bulls' men's soccer squad takes to the road to open 2002 at the Central Connecticut Tournament tomorrow and Sunday. Coach John Astudillo's squad will face the host Blue Devils in tomorrow's opener, followed by a match against Sacred Heart on Sunday. The Bulls, 8-7-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Mid-American Conference last season, will host the Bulls Fall Invitational Sept. 7-8, with Bucknell and Robert Morris taking on UB in weekend action on the RAC Field.

Women's

The women's soccer team opens with a pair of weekend tournaments. Jean-A. Tassy's team will compete in the Syracuse Orange Classic Tournament facing the host Orangewomen tomorrow and Colgate on Sunday. The Bulls, who finished the 2001 campaign 9-9 overall and 7-5 in MAC action, then head to the Purdue Boilermaker Challenge Cup the following weekend, where they will face Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the opening round on Sept. 6. UB's home opener will be Sept. 20 against Central Michigan at 7 p.m. on the RAC Field.

Basketball

Men's

Former UB basketball standout Darcel Williams has signed a contract to play professionally for Aartsellar in Belgium.

"I've always dreamed of playing pro," Williams said. "I know that a lot of kids from Buffalo don't get the opportunity to play overseas, so I am going to make the best of it."

The 6-6 forward played at UB during the 2001-02 season. He led the Bulls in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Williams posted a team-high nine double-doubles and was one of two players to start all 30 games for the Bulls. His efforts helped him earn All-Mid-American Conference Honorable Mention honors.

"We are extremely pleased that he can further his career," head coach Reggie Witherspoon said. "We are most pleased that he got his degree and that he is one of the few people that can list his occupation as professional basketball player."
