Construction Updates

University Facilities currently has 198 projects of all types at various stages of planning, design or construction, including 95 active renovation projects. There are several capital and maintenance and repair projects under way as well. The following list highlights some of the major projects.

Completed Projects:

  • Construction of the FSA dining hall expansion in the Ellicott Complex was completed in January. The new facility offers five different food stations, an expanded open dining area and a convenience store.

  • Landscaping Master Plan has been completed. One of the recommended projects resulted in plantings being placed around the new entry signage.

  • Construction for two microturbines is complete on the north side of Alumni Hall. The turbines generate power and reuse rejected heat to provide warm water in the main competition pool.

  • A major renovation has been completed in the Ellicott Complex to relocate Student Services staff. Units that were relocated include Enrollment Planning, Financial Aid, Student Processing and the Student Response Center.

  • Incandescent lamps in all traffic signals on campus have been replaced with LED lighting systems as an energy conservation project.

On-going Projects:

  • Construction of the addition to Ketter Hall is under way. This project, which will expand earthquake engineering research laboratory space in that facility, is scheduled for completion by Fall, 2003. The earthquake simulator is scheduled to go on line in September 2004.

  • Design for the addition to Jacobs Management Center for the School of Management is complete. Construction is expected to begin this spring. The 34,000-square-foot addition will contain offices and three lecture halls.

  • Farber Hall infrastructure project is under way and will be completed this spring. Three 700-ton chillers are being replaced at the South Campus. Future projects to upgrade other building systems are being planned.

  • Seven air-handling units are being replaced in Cooke and Hochstetter. The project is scheduled for completion this spring.

  • Rehab of various elevators on both campuses will be completed this spring. This project includes upgrading, controls, hoistways and cabs.

  • A major rehab is under way in Cary Hall that will upgrade laboratories for the Center for Computational Biophysics. The first phase of this project will be completed this month, and the second phase completed this coming September.

  • A new BioInformatics Center is being designed for the Buffalo Life Sciences Center at Roswell Park. Construction is scheduled to begin as early as this fall, with completion expected in Spring 2006.

  • Renovation of the historic Hayes Hall bell tower has been bid. Work is scheduled to begin in May.

  • MacKay Heating Plant is scheduled for renovation beginning in May. The old coal-fired boilers will be replaced with new, energy-efficient, gas-fired boilers.

  • The Lee Road Development Master Plan is nearing completion. A phased construction project involving student housing, commercial/retail development and some academic support space is being planned.

  • Viron Energy, an energy services company, has been selected to perform energy conservation measures on the South Campus. A detailed energy audit is under way. The implementation phase is expected to begin this fall.

  • A renovation project for Admissions and the Honors Program in Talbert Hall is under construction.

  • A major renovation is in design for the Center for Hearing and Deafness on the ground and first floors of Cary Hall.

  • A design study is under way for an ABSL3 lab in the Biomedical Education Building. Funding for this project is being sought through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

New Projects:

  • An addition to Bissell Hall is being designed to enhance locker rooms and support spaces for University Police.

  • A major renovation of Goodyear Hall this summer will upgrade the heating and electrical systems. Completion is expected in August.

  • Roadway resurfacing at various North Campus locations will occur this summer, along with the construction of a new parking lot at the Ellicott Complex.

  • The replacement of the curtain wall for Allen Hall is in design.

  • A pedestrian access ramp for Crosby Hall will be constructed this summer.

  • Repairs to the steam tunnel on the South Campus are in design.
